Boyd Big Tree Conservation Area and a Taste of Asian Cuisine

Hello All!
This suggestion is to kick off the hiking aspect of the group for the season. Boyd Big Tree is a great little park (conveniently located behind my house), which is a nice way to start things off. You can view all the info here:
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/boydbigtreepreserve/index.htm
I think we should do a nice "up and down" the mountain trail here using the Janie Trail, which I’ve done many times before. The concept is to meet at the park, and take a few vehicles over to the other side of the mountain where we will park them in my development (plenty of room). We then return to the start of the park again and proceed to take the trail up the mountain, then down the other side where our vehicles await. Drive time for the parking detail isn't that bad (about 1/2 hour total trip). The hike itself usually proves quite nice with some great views. You will see this location offered quite frequently around other Meetups, but I've never seen one offer my suggested topper...dine at the Golden Chopsticks for a fine veggie/vegan meal afterwards. It's a small"ish" oriental style restaurant which is only a mile down the road from the end point (if that). It’s low key, and a FAV of mine. Read more about it here:
http://www.goldenchopsticksusa.com/index.html
Since it will follow the hike, it's of course not mandatory. We can work out a ride situation of those who wish to go vs those who wish to leave. My house is opened for any needed bathroom breaks in between (lol). Hope some of you can make it!

Very cool to see all who signed up so far! @Jan: yeah, you can do this. It is a bit on the uphill side at first, but that downhill makes it all work out. This is about 5-6 miles in total. I will NEVER go fast. I know, it's a relative term, but I don't like speed hiking at all. It will be good to see you again, so please show if you can spare the time :-). @ Amanda: It would be VERY cool to have a baby in a backback along! I would worry a bit about the uphill portion, so it does depend how "strong" she'd feel that day.
For a gauge on the steepness of the climb (in it's steepest spots that is), I would use a standard staircase. Think of that only MUCH longer. In the rougher spots that's about 50 yards or so. There are lots of switch-backs, so it does help a bit.
Hope you all can still make this. I find it a good starter hike for the season. BTW, if it gets too much, plenty of trails connect at other spots for an ez trek back.

We can try, too, but we will have to peel off at the steep part, so hopefully that isn't right up front. That baby backpack has gotta be 40 lbs!

How hard are we talking? How fast. I just did 11 miles, but I'm slow. I don't want to slow the group down!

Hmm, I finally clicked the link to the trail and see that it is the most difficult of the trails. My friend was hoping to bring her baby in this specialized baby hiking backpack. Is that even advisable?

Hey Frank, had to change the date for this, but hope you can still attend. We'll going to be doing the Janie trail plus about another mile to get over the mountain. The link above goes to the web site, where you can click "maps" to see that trail. In total it looks like it will be about 4 miles. A bit rough sometimes on the uphilll climb, but I take things slow :-).

    Brian,
What do you figure the entire distance for the hike would be? ..Frank
