For highly able readers and reluctant readers alike, this course will renew the joy in reading and writing in your child. We will focus on develop students elementary level reading and writing skills through assigned readings, book choice and writing assignments. Each five week period, students will be assigned one book and will be required to choose another book from a selected related reading list. Students in the upper elementary grades begin to develop skills as independent readers and writers. As independent writers, students will begin to develop basic grammar skills such as identifying and writing complete sentences, identifying and utilizing the parts of speech and subject verb agreement. Students will begin to develop basic paragraphs through a variety of writing assignments including reading response journals, responding to informational texts, short narratives and more. As independent readers, students will develop skills in reading comprehension and fluency. Students will develop higher level reading comprehension skills to be able to: utilize their background knowledge of a topic for deeper understanding of the text, generate and ask questions throughout reading, draw conclusions, make informed predictions, visualize and summarize what the text is about.
