What keeps a bridge from falling down? How do satellites stay in orbit? Why does it hurt when you fall from a long distance but not from a lower starting point? Physics provides answers to all these questions and more. Engineers use their understanding of physics to solve problems and make fantastic creations.
This class will explore basic principles of physics through the construction of bridges, roller coasters, amusement park rides, simple machines and more. Each unit will require students to complete a design challenge that will emphasize problem-solving strategies and the engineering design process.
Students will use pre-algebra and elementary algebra to analyze experimental data and perform calculations required for their experiments. Registration is restricted to students who either concurrently enroll in pre-algebra or pass the HEROES Academy pre-algebra challenge exam. Additional challenges will be provided for students who are enrolled in algebra.
