This group is about sharing a passion, new or old, for Colorado’s mining remains, ghost towns, abandoned railroads and stage coach roads. We will explore areas with known mining history, searching for the obvious and not so obvious remnants of what it was like to live in a mining town. Some hikes may lead us to a cluster of dilapidated buildings, while others may reveal only pieces of an old stove. At times it may be a complete surprise as to what we will find. All hikes will be slow paced due to our search for signs of history, but not all hikes will be easy. We may hike along an old railroad bed or we may follow a faint trail from mine dump to mine dump up a steep mountainside. Each trip will indicate the estimated level of difficulty so please know your limits. Trips are not limited only to summer but will include cross country ski/snowshoe travels too. It is fascinating to see what it was like to live in these places in the winter!
This group is not about scavenging what is left of these disappearing places so please leave the metal detector at home and take only pictures.
After work hikes will be based out of the Roaring Fork Valley. Our day or weekend trips will include locations throughout Colorado i.e. San Juan Mountains, Leadville area, etc.
