Are you HIV Positive and looking for advice and support?
HIV isn't WHO we are, it's just something we have. It's become the new-norm to live a long and healthy life while being HIV positive. Although, HIV is considered a manageable condition, there are still challenges that we must face and there's no reason we have to do this on our own. Meet others coping with issues of:
-Stigma -Depression and anxiety -Medical care -Understanding test results -Medication and adherence -Dating and relationships -Isolation -Sex and intimacy -Disclosing your status to others -Work or State Benefits
Join us for in-person casual, optimistic, and non-threatening meetups where we can safely and discreetly discuss challenges and accomplishments of living with HIV. This peer support group is a facilitated by a fun-loving guy who's been poz for over 22 years. He is not a licensed therapist and this group is run independently from any organization.
We're a great group of quality guys who are a wealth of information and know what it's like to live healthy with HIV. The vibe is inspirational and informative. No pressure, non-awkward, and there are no judgments of what is talked about. Read the reviews and see what new members had to say. It's a "closed group" for those who are HIV+ and identify themselves as a gay male.
Meetings are held once a month - on a weeknight from 7-8:45pm. See "next event" for the exact date. RSVP as a "yes" and the location will be emailed to you a few days prior to the meeting. A $10 donation is requested to help with the group fees and pay for the room rental. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The important thing is that you attend!
Unfortunately, stigma is often an issue for us living with HIV. If you would like to join anonymously, simply create another (anonymous) meetup profile (from another email address). OR, if you have an existing profile on Meetup.com, you can click on the link "Hide my list of Meetups on my profile" (located under your profile photo) - double check your other groups to be sure this also checked off for each group).
There are already several online poz communities where you can meet someone for a virtual chat; but, the focus of this Meetup group is to actually meet in person and talk face-to-face. Most of you have joined to "connect and meet other guys living with HIV in NYC". So I'm asking that you please attend at least one support group meeting to personally meet the organizer and maintain your membership status.
This Meetup group is made private so that only members can see your profile photo. Membership is screened for approval. If you feel comfortable posting your face photo, this could be a good way to connect with other guys for potential: friends, dates, or work connections. Note: This isn't a hookup site, so please keep it clean (no shirtless torso pics).
As a member, you'll be able to access the "DISCUSSIONS" TAB (located in the top tool bar) for useful links to articles and resources on the topic of HIV.
Looking to meet other HIV+ guys? There is a social group for HIV+ guys. Sign up for their newsletter for various happenings in the NYC area: pozalliance.org/subscribe/
Generally, the age range of this support group is early 20's to early 50's and is geared towards the newly diagnosed (infected 10 years or less). There is no age discrimination - membership is determined by the number of years being poz. If you're a long-term survivor, luckily we're in the year 2016 and resource options are available in NYC. You shouldn't have to deal with your HIV challenges alone. The following are groups for those who have been living with HIV for an extended period of time:
