This hike has some strenuous climbs, and also offers fantastic views and long stretches of peaceful, breezy trails and woods roads. We will start at the Quarry Hill Road Parking area and hike up white past South Brace Mtn, Brace Mtn, We'll turn east on the Red trail, past the NY/CT/MA tri-point past Mt. Frissel, CT's state high point. Then I'm going down Mt. Frissel (Yes, I'm going down and back up..) and back to the white trail going up Mt Alander. We stop for lunch on top of Mt Alander and then follow the white trail all the way towards Bash Bish Falls lower parking area, which is where we spotted our cars in the beginning.
The peak of Brace is somewhat flattened out and treeless so it makes for relaxing views where you can find a soft spot to sprawl out on and take in the beauty of nature. You'll need the rest as the hike to Brace will get your blood pumping for sure. From Brace there is a great scene to the west. Brace hangs high over the farmland and neighborhoods dotting the valley below and affords great views of the mountain ranges in the distance.
During the hike we will reach the highest point in Connecticut at Mt. Frissell, with the summit being in Massachusetts. We then hike up Alander Mountain with panoramic views behind us. We then follow the South Taconic trail (white) all the way towards Bash Bish falls. We can then add another 1-2 miles from the parking lot to see the base of the falls.
NOTE: This is a challenging hike with about 4,300' - 5,000' vertical gain. It should take about 6-7 hours, and we'll be hiking at a steady pace. I want to emphasize this hike is not for beginners! Please only RSVP if you are a self-sufficient hiker.
PARKING AREAS: The parking area at Quarry Hill is quite small, please carpool as much as possible! We will be starting at Quarry Hill, and spotting half our cars at Bash Bish Parking Area.
