Rockefeller St Park, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Stained Glass

  • Apr 6, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

About the Hike:

IMPORTANT Update: Union Church at Pocantico Hills is not having standard viewings Sunday, however instead they are having an organ concert at 3pm.  This is a rare opportunity to not only see the windows but also hear the pipe organ!  Our initial arrival time for viewing was 2:30pm so this fits nicely.  It's $10 per person.  Details here: http://www.ucph.org/concerts.html

We will hike through Rockefeller State Park to Blue Hill at Stone Barns to visit this wonder of culinary excellence, farming, and education.  We will break for lunch at the Blue Hill Café where you may eat your own lunch or partake of its masterful lunch and confectionery preparations. All of the ingredients are sourced from the farm!

After lunch we will hike to the Union Church or Pocontico Hills, the Rockefeller's home church .

The church houses stained glass windows from Henri Matiss & Marc Chagall.  We will enter the church view the exquisite windows and then stay for a rare and special event, an organ concert.

Following this we will hike back to our starting point.

Bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes and water. Bring or buy lunch. For a taste of what’s in store see www.friendsrock.org and bluehillfarm.com

Return Time & Optional Ice Cream Stop and waterfront walk:

We should be off the trail around 3pm at the latest.  From Tarrytown there are NYC bound trains approximately every 30 min. By car if you were to head straight to NYC you would be there in under an hour.  My car is stopping for ice cream at Main Street Sweets in Tarrytown.  Their ice cream ranks as some of the best ice cream I have tasted.  After that I usually drive or walk down to Losee Park which affords lovely views of the river, the Tappan Zee Bridge, and the distant NYC skyline.  Losee Park also happens to be adjacent to the Tarrytown train platform.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day! Thanks to all for your company and patience. The concert extended the day by about 2 hours. 7 hours in total. Not part of my plan but I did my best to get us through the day as efficiently as possible. I'll run this again later in the year without the church stop.

I sent a group email to everyone about the Stained Glass tour. The windows are beautiful. I go us the group rate of $6 per person. I need each of you to confirm that you wish to see them because I had to pay on my credit card. So far I have reserved the minimum of 10. Need to know by Friday morning.

    April 2, 2014

    • Yvonne

      Tour please.

      April 4, 2014

    • Gregory S.

FYI, In addition to viewing the windows we will also be enjoying an organ concert. The cost for both viewing and concert is $10 per person, payable at the door.

      April 4, 2014

  • Gregory S.

Everyone. I have updated the event to include the organ concert at the church. Please update your RSVPs now if this changes your plans. Thank you. We should have plenty of drivers to shuttle from Tarrytown train station. I have added everyone on the waiting list and closed RSVPs.

    April 4, 2014

  • Gregory S.

Added Daphne. She has a car. How many can you shuttle from Tarrytown train station Daphne? I'm trying to calculate how many people I can add to the hike. Also need to know if you will be viewing the stained glass since I have to reserve spots in advance.

    April 2, 2014

    • Stacey

Just a thought, but if more people wanted to come than us drivers can shuttle how cost prohibitive would it be to share cabs?

      April 3, 2014

    • Daphne

I can fit 4 more ppl in my car, and yes I posted yesterday that I would like to do the stained glass tour... thanks.

      April 4, 2014

  • Christopher R.

Leaving from Long Island. Can pick people up along the way

    April 4, 2014

  • Lindsay

My friend will be meeting us up there - she is coming from Jersey

    April 3, 2014

  • Karine

Thanks Gregory! I wanted to be sure, because sometimes important details are omitted from the description. I'm in for the Stained Glass tour.

    April 3, 2014

  • Karine

Gregory, is there any rock scrambling area? Or sudden steep elevations? Or walking along the edge of a cliff?

    April 3, 2014

    • Gregory S.

Karine, no. The description above indicates rolling hills and carriage roads.

      April 3, 2014

  • Gregory S.

Ok I added Christopher since he has a car and can shuttle people from Tarrytown train station to the hike start.

    April 2, 2014

  • Gregory S.

I looks like we have 3 drivers available for shuttling people from the train station to the trail head. Myself, Sherrilyn, and Stacey. Anyone else driving? I can fit 4 in my car. Sherrilyn, Stacey, how many can you fit?

    April 1, 2014

    • Stacey

Anyone else coming from NJ want to carpool?

      April 2, 2014

    • Sandra

Stacey, I can come to Nj and meet carpool it depends where is meeting point.

      April 2, 2014

  • Gregory S.

I've closed RSVPs. If we get more drivers I'll open it up for more people.
