West Virginia Whitewater Rafting: Upper & Lower Gauley River Camping (Class V)

Rafting the Gauley River whitewater is a special thing. It is a hoot-and-a-half, and it can even be a transformative experience. No exaggeration: It's the kind of thing that inspires people to open new chapters in their lives. But, uh, lots of us just think Gauley River whitewater rafting is so fun you might as well camp out and make a real weekend of it. So let's do that "HOAGIES" style!

A whitewater rafting trip on the Gauley River in West Virginia offers all rafting enthusiasts some of the best whitewater rafting in the world! Once you get some Gauley River rafting under your belt, it sticks with your forever. Each twist and turn goes running through your head at work, as you drift off to sleep, watering the garden, when you least expect it. From beautiful mountains to some of the most challenging rapid slopes in West Virginia, Gauley rapids are a force to be reckoned with and a badge of honor you will never forget.

This is a combination rafting and camping trip. It will combine the adventure and excitement of Gauley River rafting with a facility and campsite that this spectacular trip deserves: The Canyon Doors Camp. This trip starts after most of the other trips have left, giving you the river almost completely to yourself. The world-class whitewater on the Upper Gauley is first on your list, and you'll spend the day tackling Class V rapids and floating beneath the steep canyon walls.

In the afternoon, you'll arrive at Canyon Doors Camp to hot showers, warm dry clothes, trays of hors d'oevres, and your favorite drinks at our timber frame pavilion. Hot Tub at Canyon Doors Gauley River  WV - Class VI MR. While you relax, our chefs prepare an unbeatable prime rib and salmon dinner for you to enjoy before you head off to one of the custom built fire rings or the spring-fed, wood fired cedar hot tubs. In the morning, a big ol' mountain breakfast is set out to refuel you for another thrilling day of whitewater rafting, this time on the Lower Gauley. Plenty of big rapids punctuate the rest of trip before heading back to camp to watch your video, swap stories, and (for most of our guests) book next year's trip!

NOTE: You must have some prior rafting experience before attending. If you have rafted a Class IV+ river with me on one of my Maine whitewater rafting trips then you are already on the VIP list for this!

What To Expect:

  • This overnight trip rafts the world class West Virginia Gauley River for 2 days. Class I to Class V+ whitewater – Rapids are big, long and powerful and could cause rafts to capsize. Prior rafting experience is recommended.
  • Upon arriving you will check-in, enjoy coffee and juice as you pack your personal gear into our truck.  Your gear is trucked into the site so you don't have to worry about losing it on the river and you can bring just about anything but the kitchen is already down there.
  • Tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag rentals are available when making a reservation.
  • Soft drinks are provided at the campsite.  If you have special dietary needs, please let our reservation staff know in advance.

I need a ride. Leaving from Brooklyn or Manhattan after work. Willing to go to NJ or other close places to catch the ride. Also willing to chime in with coffee for the driver and, of course, money for gas.
