The Present & Future of Natural User Experiences

A presentation and demonstration of next-generation, none-tactile multimodal interfaces created with Kinect for Windows

Oscar Murillo, Principal User Experience Architect for Kinect for Windows, will showcase the transformational power of voice and gesture technology with a demonstration illustrating how much the Kinect sensor has grown beyond its gaming roots. Hence, revolutionizing the way all of us interact with the technology around us, from media and brands, to, products and services.

Oscar E. Murillo is Kinect for Windows’s Principal User Experience Architect.

Since 2002, Oscar has been designing Natural User Interfaces for Microsoft. These experiences include Windows Speech Recognition, Kinect for XBOX, the Microsoft Home of the Future, and a suite of pen-and-touch applications released with Windows 8.

From 2006 to 2009, Oscar was tasked with creating futuristic demonstrations for Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s Chief Research and Strategy Officer. These demos were used by Microsoft’s Senior Leadership team to help illustrate the company’s long-term vision for how technology can enable positive global change in healthcare, education, manufacturing, retail, public safety, and productivity.

Before joining Microsoft , Oscar was an Art Director at AT&T, InfoSpace Mobile and, where he created mobile and online experiences for Renault, U2, T-Mobile, Orange, Sprint, Cingular, Forbes, People, Cosmopolitan, Wallpaper Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal.

Oscar has been awarded 12 patents (30 pending), is an active member of IxDA, IDSA, AIGA, SIGCHI and DMI, and served as Design Director for the Computer Human Interaction conference (CHI) from 2008-2011. Oscar has lectured at the Illinois Institute of Design and the University of Washington’s School of Art.

Oscar studied Industrial Design at the National University of Colombia, Visual Communications at Taller Cinco, and Multimedia at the Vancouver Film School.


Chris White is currently a Senior Program Manager working on Natural User Interfaces in the Kinect for Windows group at Microsoft. He worked on Microsoft Office for 7 years as a developer, and worked on health care software for 5½ years before joining the Kinect team. In his spare time, he is an installation artist, and a competitive Ultimate player.
