The State of Reading

Will Mitchell (from Washington City Paper and Longform.org) will demo Longform's soon-to-be-released iPad app and talk about where it fits into the growing market for readers. We'll find out what's new with Instapaper and the Safari Reading List, and look at some ways to optimize long online stories for readability, including an overview of the hNews microformat developed by the AP. We'll also take a survey of sites curating longform journalism, and talk about the ways some publishers have integrated "distraction free" reading services and layouts.

If you have a related project or work in this area, we'd also be interested to hear from you at the meetup.

Will was incredibly informative while still accessible for a diverse audience. Great stuff.

Also, anybody who's interested is invited to the City Paper holiday party in at Mellow Mushroom Pizza in Adams Morgan after we finish up the presentation and discussion. I'm planning the presentation to go about 45 minutes.

It sounds like we also need a volunteer for lobby duty, since the front doors lock at 6pm. So if you're totally uninterested in the topic (at least the first 15 minutes of it) but want to help out, let us know! I'm planning to get started very promptly after 6.
