  • VIS2013 Workshop on News and Visualization

    Atlanta Marriott Marquis

As news content moves from desktop to mobile devices and the expectations of real-time information increases, audiences are beginning to seek news visualizations for their on-the-go, fast-paced lives, and to view them on a variety of devices in a variety of contexts. These have created important challenges from a visualization and content perspective that we aim to address in this cross-discipline workshop. The goals of this workshop are: - To explore the challenges and opportunities for presenting and interacting with visualizations on mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), focusing on new presentation patterns and gesture controls via touch and other modalities - To explore the workflow, design and production challenges of creating visualizations for breaking-news, focusing on tools and techniques. - Understand the differences between traditional visualizations and news visualizations for storytelling This workshop aims to attract visualization scholars, journalism theorists, journalists, user experience researchers, graphic designers, data scientists, statisticians, and programmers interested in information visualizations for news, as a way to continue the cross-discipline community that has emerged, with a new focus. More information will be posted on our website: www.newsvis.com *** Important Dates *** Deadline for submissions: September 16, 2013 Notification of acceptance: September 30, 2013 Workshop: October 17, 2013 *** Submission and Participation *** We are inviting researchers and practitioners to present their research, work practices, case studies, prototypes, and usability studies of visualizations as a part of presenting news. We are soliciting extended abstracts and short papers for presentation during the workshop's introductory sessions. The second portion of the workshop will be a hackathon where the attendees will form small teams and create news visualizations, applying team-based creativity and lessons from the presentations. More details about the hackathon will be disclosed shortly. Also, all registered and interested attendees of IEEE VIS are encouraged to attend the workshop presentations and participate in the hackathon, with a special invitation to members of both general communities (computer scientists and journalism) but also those who work at intersection of these from an academic or professional perspective. *** Submission Guidelines *** Submissions for papers and extended abstracts for presentation can be 1-3 pages long, with the length of submission appropriate to the contribution.
