Telling stories through financial graphics
Sam Arnold-Forster and Himanshu Ojha, Reuters
A former Merrill Lynch oil analyst, Sam is project leader, Financial Graphics. for Reuters News and specialises in the intersection between content and technology. Himanshu Ojha is a data journalist who worked on the recent United State of Inequality (http://www.reuters.com/subjects/income-inequality) series. Their talk will be on how financial graphics can be aggregated to tell richer stories and how they use them to make an impact through social media. Sam will focus on the day-to-day production of financial graphics and Himanshu will talk about longer-term data acquisition projects.
When all your journalism is data journalism
Marianne Bouchart, Bloomberg News
Marianne is Web Producer EMEA for Bloomberg News and is responsible for kick-starting data journalism projects within the organisation. As all journalism at Bloomberg is data journalism, Marianne will show how Bloomberg handles data on a daily basis including the tools reporters use to find, compare, analyse and visualise data.
OpenCorporates - a sneak peak at new features
Chris Taggart, OpenCorporates
Chris Taggart is a former journalist and magazine publisher, who has been working full time in the field of open data for the past 3 years. As well as co-founding OpenCorporates, he was the founder of OpenlyLocal and OpenCharities. Chris will give a short introduction to OpenCorporates - the largest openly licensed database of companies in the world - will look at some newly introduced features, and give a sneak peak at some upcoming ones too.
Why data journalism isn’t the job of one department
Emily Cadman and Martin Stabe, FT
Emily is the head of interactive at the FT. She’s worked in online journalism in one guise or another for the past 10 years. Martin is an interactive producer at the FT. Prior to joining he ran the web operations for Press Gazette and Retail Week. Their talk will focus on the the team effort needed to produce good data journalism; plus the demands around balancing quality, speed and volume and building bespoke systems.
