Knight Foundation Civic Data Challenge

In case you missed it, the Knight Foundation has a new contest coming up - the Civic Data Challenge:

"The Civic Data Challenge turns the raw data of “civic health" into beautiful, useful applications and visualizations, enabling communities to be better understood and made to thrive."

The web site is. The best part - they've already collected the data! wink I'll be downloading the data some time this week and doing some preliminary exploration.

This solves a huge problem for me, by the way. I'm writing a book on computational journalism and was looking for lots of relevant data for the programming examples.

Actually, upon closer reading, it turns out this isn't a challenge announcement, it's more of a "last call" for submissions. The deadline is the 29th of July. I don't know when the actual announcement was.
