So welcome to the Johnny Cash breakout ride.
This is a ride for all the "Johnnys" who are ready for something with a little more bite but are not quite ready some of the harder/faster breakouts. At the same time, this ride is all about camaraderie and being social. If you are looking for a fast ride, this is not it.
Johnny is slow.
So what can you expect? The route is entirely on the bike trail near the Folsom Prison (other side of river). We will start at the Fish Hatchery and head up to Beals Point via the trail on the north side of Lake Natomas. The ride is 18 miles in length and includes some hills on the back end with a view of where Johnny was in the 1950s.
The hills are mild but present enough of a challenge to help build technique and confidence for the longer more difficult rides, if that is your goal. We'll take one brief stop on the way to gather up the group, look at the prison if you like, then begin our climb. Once we arrive at Beals Point/Folsom Lake we'll take a nice break and everyone can compare war stories. There are bathrooms and water for fill ups towards the front of the beach (the point).
While this is a beginning hill ride it is not meant for beginners. You should be comfortable riding for at least than 30 minutes without stopping. I, Roger, will sweep (bring up the rear of all riders) as long as you are meeting the 13-14mph minimum speed on the flat. If you discover you have bitten off more than you wanted you are free to turn around at any time, we take the same route in both directions (out and back).
Rain will cancel.
