A Bracing Walk from the Thames Barrier, a Flight(!) & Evening Shoot in Docklands

OK - this just might be the best photowalk ever in the whole world!! (or maybe not).  We are going to start by visiting the Thames Barrier - that amazing giant piece of engineering that keeps our capital safe from flooding, and then we will walk along the Thames Path through mixed industrial and green areas to the O2 and then we shall fly - YES FLY - across the Thames to the Royal Victoria Dock, with its mix of historic and modern buildings and the most amazing scenery to photograph.   If we time it right we should get some shots of the sun dropping over Canary Wharf from the air before we land and then some low light shots and possibly night shots around the docklands.

So we'll meetup at North Greenwich station at 11am and depart at 11.15 sharp.  I'm arriving at Waterloo and will be in the usual place at 10.15 with a view to leaving on the Jubilee Line at 10.30 sharp for those who want to travel together - please let me know where you are coming to.   Once at North Greenwich we'll set off after possibly 15 mins of wandering outside to shoot the O2 (Millenium Dome) closeup and the surrounding area.   We'll then catch a bus - 472 or 161 to Charlton (10 mins) (please bring an oyster card or travel card) and after a short walk we'll be riverside next to the amazing Thames Barrier.  If we want there is an information centre (admission £3.75) and cafe.

We'll then walk northwest back towards the O2 with opportunities to photograph industrial areas as we pass and then have the option of visiting the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park (free entry) for those that want to.   All along this stretch of the Thames there are great views NW towards the dome and the city and to the east towards the barrier and beyond.   Just before we get to the O2 again we'll arrive at the Emirates AirLine where we will take off for our short trip across to Docklands.  There is another cafe and loo here. Tickets cost £3.20 with oyster of travel card (£4.30 without).  During our flight there will be amazing views over London, Canary Wharf and the industrial areas of Silvertown.

Once we have safely landed and cleared customs, we'll concinue our walk along the northerly edge of Royal Victoria Dock to the ExCel Centre and then across the Victoria suspension Bridge where once again there are fine views east to the London City Airport, west towards Canary Wharf with onward views of the city skyscrapers and the Shard.  South of the docks are the Spillers Millenium Mill and the Rank Hovis Premier Mill, two remaining historic examples of the docks' past.

We then have a choice to stay on and capture some night shots as the sun drops to the west or to find a bar, or to wend our ways home again.   We can catch the DLR either on the south side from W Silvertown station, or to the north side, Royal Victoria Dock station, both trains go to Canning town from where we can change back on to the Jubilee Line and onwards to Waterloo, or central town.

CHALLENGES:

• Capture the Barrier - try to get something different, the angle, the detail, closeup, the sun's reflection is great.

• An industrial shot - try black and white.

• A view from the air before we land - watch out for reflections from the windows.

• A low light shot either from the docks or from the air and possibly a night shot.

• Anything that typifies the docks for you - new or old, or both together.

TIPS and GENERAL INFO:

• Tripod is optional - remember it is a long walk and therefore might get heavy.

• Because of this long walk and weight don't bring too much equipment that probably won't be used - for those with an SLR - wide angle lens might be good, and a standard to medium telephoto/zoom.

• Walking shoes.

• Passports (if you have one)

• Water.

• Waterproofs and layers (it is windy in both places).

• I'll publish a google map nearer the time with the route and more info on what to see and also email my contact number.

• Costs £1 for meetup and as above for fares etc.

Finally don't forget to RSVP YES - this should be great fun and a chance to visit a part of London which you might otherwise never see.   Thanks to Andy Lang for the use of his photos, and to both Andy and Nathan for coming with me on one of the reckies.

Another great meet. Such a friendly group of people and what a great way to discover another part of London I've never been to before. I'll leave Mike and Keith to post the photo's taken during the 'flight' back to Greenwich...I was too busy studying the floor of the pod :-) Thanks for organising this Peter.

I'll meet you at Waterloo aswell. Will email my MB number.

    December 5, 2013

    • Peter

OK Annie - make sure you meet me by 10.15 - when you arrive at Waterloo exit the platform onto the concourse and turn left - once you pass all the other platforms you will see starbucks on your right and the cuneo statue is next to the Cafe Nero kiosk on your right.

  • Sheenagh M.

I'm really looking forward to this event but am slightly phobic in the city. Can I meet up at Waterloo, please? If you could tell me exactly where to meet you at the station it would make it easier for me. :) Once I'm with people who know where they are going, it's fine.

    December 5, 2013

    • Peter

Hi Sheenagh - I'm planing to get to Waterloo between 10am and 10.15, depending on which train I catch - need to leave Waterloo by 10.30 latest - so if you can be there for 10.15. When we meet at Waterloo we tend to meet opposite Starbucks by the Cuneo statue NW end of concourse (above the old eurostar terminal). So that will be fine - please email me you tel number in case we miss each other - I'll email out my number to attendees tomorrow. Peter. PS Get a Travelcard ticket.

Will we finish before 5:30 PM. because I'm working at evenings!?

    November 5, 2013

    • Peter

Hi Angelika - I'm hoping to get to the docks at 4pm ish (sunset is 3.52) or perhaps slightly later so we can get some low sun pics or early evening pics from the cable car and then on the docks but it is difficult on a walk to time it exactly because of the number of people. You can leave at any time though if you have an appointment - look forward to meeting you.

Do we really need our passport?!

    November 4, 2013

Peter are you thinking of doing a blue hour whilst on the cable car. That would be brill. But it is a quick ride over the Thames. People need to prep their gear up before going on. Also the gondola is pretty small and can hold 5 people Max at a time l think?

    October 1, 2013

    • Peter

Ooooooh - I knew somebody would ask.......Answer I don't know but probably not - I suspect we will cross about 15.00 (sunset is 15.52) so really looking for low golden sun and long shadows at that time. I'm hoping for some afternoon shots at the docks before dark as if it is already dark it narrows the options - so in a nutshell - I'm hoping golden shots on the cable car and 30-40mins of low light evening shots at the docks before dark so blue hour at the docks........But really not sure and it is difficult to work the times exactly on a long walk.

Great minds Peter - I've just put up details for a night time shoot in Portsmouth. However, having never been to the Thames Barrier, I am definitely coming along to this! Sounds fun and I wait with curiosity to find out what the flight is :-)
