Butterflies in the Glasshouse, RHS Wisley

'Escape winter's chill and set hearts a-flutter with a visit to Butterflies in the Glasshouse'.........................so says the RHS web-site!

Actually I've been before and it is a great hour or so seeing and hopefully photographing some pretty butterflies. Obviously it's indoors so even if it's raining (or snowing) - it will be dry and warm.

This is a pic I took Jan 2012 and I think this butterfly is pretty amazing - having transparent wings! Usually there are many different species of different sizes and colours. You can get really close and I've seen people taking pics with all sorts of cameras - even phones and getting pretty good results.

I'd suggest a slightly earlier start - only because when I've been before it gets quite crowded later. The glasshouse tends to be very warm and quite humid and so lenses will mist up for the first 10 mins or so - so a cleaning cloth would be useful.

It's not that bright so we may need to use higher ISO settings. Ideally a macro lens would be best but once again whatever camera or lens we should be able to get some good shots. For close ups a relatively fast shutter speed and for real macros a smaller aperture so that as much as possible of the butterfly is in focus. So definitely a high iSO to achieve both of these.

If it's not raining - and ideally a nice frosty sunny day - we could spend some time in the gardens, getting some winter shots - some of the group went in the summer and it would be good to see everything again in its sleepy wintery state. There is a great refectory for lunch, snacks or a drink - or even an ice cream!!!!

Cost is £1 meetup fee (which we will collect for Mandy as she has paid the website fees) and £10.50 entry each (£11.55 if you want to giftaid it) or free if you are RHS members.

If you can think of any photo challenges for the day then let me know.

(This is a Golden Birdwing btw)

The RHS Wisley facebook page have announced a buttefly photo competition. It sounds like they may given favour to those taken with people or flowers in (so mine might be a nonstarter!) - but it's worth having a go!

Fortunately many of the butterflies remained still for lengthy of period of times, so it was ideal for making the most out of tripods/monopods. However there's no problem with hand held photography either.

    Hi Jenna
Personally I found that my best photos were handheld; but I think the best photos from the day were probably all on a tripod with a serious macro lens and special flash... The biggest issue I faced was trying to stop my lenses steaming up. learning point of the day - don't leave cameras in a cold car overnight before visiting a greenhouse!

Pity I couldn't make it, looks like some very cool shots! Just wondering if the people who went found that a tripod/monopod was required or if handheld was ok?

Hi Natalie - I can take you from Guildford station but not Woking. I need to be at Wisley about 15 mins before 10am so we will need to leave Guildford station 9.30am latest. Let me know - there are 2 entrances to Guildford station I can pick you up from the main entrance next to Platform 2.

Hi, I'd like to join the group this Sunday. Is anyone able to give me a lift from Woking or Guildford train station? Thanks, Natalie

Of course you can come last minute Sophie - the closing date for rsvp I think is just to give the organiaer a chance to make a list of who's coming. I'll email you my tel number and so if you do come you can text me so I can tell you where we are - RSVP yes - but pls text me or let me know if you're not coming so I'm not looking for you!

Really gutted that I am unable to make it for the postponed date on 3rd Feb! If anyone else is planning on heading there on any other date then PM me as I would still be keen to go but would just have difficulty getting there from the train station.

    January 22, 2013

  • Peter

Hey guys - I did go for an hour as I'm local - the roads were ok but although there weren't that many people the butterflies were a bit thin on the ground - there should be more varieties on upcoming weekends according to staff - they actually have a 'hatchery'(?) / emergence cupboard where you can see the chrysalises - varieties include: Pink Rose, Tree Nymph, Great Mormon, Big Billy, Orange Banded Shoemaker(??!!), Blue Morpho, Giant Orange Tip, Emerals Swallowtail, Owl, Malachite and many more........so make sure you come.

    Hi All.

I have postponed the meetup until sunday 3rd Feb. I am sorry as I know some of you were keen to try to make it tomorrow, however there is a responsibility to all and I would hate the idea of an accident or people getting stranded, struggling to get to Wisley from afar - the roads might be improved tomorrow but might be worse with ice and I'm sure it is the wrong sort of snow and ice for South West Trains!.

I suspect the Sunday will be busier than Saturday so could we try to meet at 10am - opening time? Also the entry is slightly more - £10.75 each (£11.85 if you want to giftaid).

If people want to go tomorrow - that's fine email each other - I might even go as I live near Guildford.

Once again sorry to do this but I think it is sensible.

    Peter

Hi, I have to say that I will not be able to make this - my home town Basingstoke is under 3/4 inches of snow and its getting worse, so tomorrow is a no-go for me I am afraid. Maybe the best thing to do is push it back 1 or 2 weeks?

I agree that this is a good idea. However, you would need an organiser for the Week 2 and some members who are getting a lift won't get one unless a local member with a car is also going as part of the second group.

Even though this might split the group up this seems to me to be a very practical way forward. Good thinkng :)

Can I suggest that with the weather being so bad we split this event into two meetup, this one and another one next week. Same agenda but it will let those who can't make this Saturday attend next Saturday. Normally I would not suggest this but with such high numbers attending I think we could manage two visits to Wisley.

Looking forward to this, is this a record number of "Yes" RSVPs? Peter, we've talked about this before but maybe it's worth mentioning for the benefit of other members. During this event, is the glasshouse generally quite full of people or is will there be physical space to use monopod or tripod without being a nuisance to non-photographers?

    January 12, 2013

    • Peter

There will be people with tripods and monopods but obviously please be sensitive to others - they do restrict the number in the glass house at any one time but you canstay in there as long as you want.

When I went last year it was quite a crush in there so I would recommend a monopod to a tripod. The butterfies tend to move about quite a lot too so snapping on the move is going to be more easier.

The RHS site says that if you come to Woking or Byfleet on the train and produce your ticket on entry you will get a reduction on entry to £8.69

Is it only to these two stations? Will anyone be passing by either Woking or West Byfleet on the way and could pick me up? As both of these are closer to me in London then having to go all the way to Guildford and backtrack to Wisley. Plus discount on the entry fee would be nice :)

It looks like my car is full, picking people up from Guildford station - please if others are available to pick people up either from stations on either the Portsmouth or Southampton line will they make themselves known and people needing lifts please also make yourselves known. many thanks.

Tine is looking for a lift from a station on the Southampton to Waterloo line - any offers? If so please can you liaise with Tine - Thanks.

Since I sold my macro lens earlier this year, I will see if I can borrow my Dad's! Question though, are flashes allowed? I haven't got a macro flash anymore, but might be able to use my portrait flash.

Is it needed & worth bringing a flash? I haven't got a marco (will be using a[masked]mm lens) but I can probably borrow a flash if you think it might improve shots etc? I haven't really ever used a hot shoe flash before!

There will probably be enough light to be ok without a flash. I have just "re-purchase" the MP-E 5:1 macro lens - which will give extreme close ups - but requires a lot of light (flash). Just got myself a monopod too .. look forward to giving that a spin!

Tip for the lens mist issue - keep your camera bag open in the car on the way and let your camera and lenses get warm (not hot!), zip it up before leaving the car and only open it inside the hothouse. Because the lenses arent cold there is no (or very little) reason for the moisture in the air to condensate out .... :)

Hello all. I will be traveling from over near Dorset borders so can give a lift to anyone en-route (A31, M27 and onwards)....let me know. However, be warned that, weather permitting I will probably want to make the most of the gardens as a whole and do more than just catching butterflies (lens only) before heading home!

PS Im coming up from M27 - A3, Im happy to offer lifts for anyone who can get to an obvious pickup place on my route. Andy :)

Hi Andy - there is a very good refectory there doing nice lunches with the option of a further wander round the gardens after - it's not cheap to get in and people might like to spend a bit more time to make the most of the entrance fee. There are no pubs that are very near but if you can find somewhere nice and easy to get to and people are up for it why not!

Has there been any thought about where more socially minded members might like to meet up afterwards? Maybe a late lunch somewhere local? If this isnt the usual thing then take this as a suggestion - and Im happy to see if I can find somewhere. Much better than taking a few pix and then going straight home? Andy :)
