Langstone Nature reserve, Hayling Island

I am afraid I have had to change the date for this meetup, I hope it still suits all those coming. It may actually be an even nicer time to go.

I used to live around the corner from here and regularly walked my dogs there, seeing a variety of wildlife and even some rare species. According to the RSPB Star Species include: Black tailed Godwit, Brent Goose, Dunlin, Mediterranean Gull and Little Tern. I have seen much more than this though!

There is usually an RPSB volunteer down there with a scope who can answer any questions people have - although by the sounds of it we will be ok with the members on here!

Recommend The Ship Inn / Royal Oak in Langstone for after walk drinks!

Robin, the software I was referring to is called RescuePro and is made by SanDisk. Unfortunately it's not cheap!! Standard version is $40 and this is an annual license.

Excellent meetup, the weather was much better than expected, it was sunshine most of the time. And now I have a perfect excuse to buy that teleconverter I always wanted :) Many thanks to Sophie for organising and giving me a lift. Pub lunch also very enjoyable!

A lovely morning, the weather turned out good in the end and we got a few shots. Recommend going later this year to see more species. And longer lenses might be advisable!

Thanks to those who made it!

I have not got a wet weather plan so i suggest that if anyone is concerned about this and travelling a long way then decide in the morning?

I will be there regardless, even if I get there and no one else comes! It can be a bit hit and miss in terms of what you see, however i used to visit daily with my camera around my neck and rarely found nothing to snap! If the weather lets us down i will happily try and host another visit later on in the year. sophie

    Hi all!

Sorry for the delay in posting in the group, I had a stressful week at work and then a much needed holiday!

Back to normal now, I plan to meet at the first car park as you reach Hayling, literally just opposite the petrol station after the bridge! There are various other places to park - another car park further on past the Esso garage (if you arrived about 30 minutes earlier) and also the Ship inn car park before the bridge. I will be there from 9:45 and suggest starting our walk at 10:15! I will send out my mobile number to the group nearer the time. I may be able to collect you David i suggest Havant train station might be best for both of us! Please let me know if you would like a lift, i could pick you up about 9:30.

I hope the weather stays nice for us!

Drinks / lunch in Ship inn afterwards!

    Sophie :)

Hi Sophie, trying to work out what kind of lens is required to take decent pictures of the birds. Will they be within reach of a 300mm lens?

No worries Sophie. In fact Ive just checked high water times, if we get there at the suggested time we will beat the windsurfers there. In which case Id gamble a suggestion that it might be better to move the parking to the Esso gagrage site. Its on the waters edge and on the Billy trail, walk north along it and the coast 5 mins to the birding bits. Andy :)

Hi all, if I have found the right car park opposite the first garage on Hayling, be aware that the car park opposite is very small. A second option is to carry on down the main road on Hayling and turn right immediately after the Esso garage on the right. Even this one gets full with dog walkers, birders and - if it is windy - windsurfers, but you should be able to find something at 10 am. It can carry around 50 cars though. Hope this is of use, Andy :)

    Thanks all!

Andy thanks for the information, i think you are right and maybe spring would be best for this visit to see all the nesting birds and babies!

I will hold fire on this one i think but it can be later on! I am looking forward to the 19th hoping to make it to see the butterflies!

Hi Andy! thanks for your comment. The guidance would be great! I used to live right near there too (near Stoke corner) and walked most days with my camera taking snaps - i am only a beginner really but most of them are on my flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/jevvo the little Egrets are my favourite! do you know the best time of year to go on this trip?

Hi Sophie! Im not a bird expert by any means - I know Langstone primarily cos Im a windsurfer - but from my limited knowledge; winter (like now!) tends to see the more unusual birds arrive, they also flock in numbers. Summer sees more of the terns and such like. What I would say is go (if you can of course) when the light is good. There are lots of dark colours (mud!) and birds will be at the end of your lens reach, so the more you can help your sensor, the better! I personally like it when the weather warms up, then you get the butterflies and insects but I guess thats a long way off! For more accurate information on the birds go to any of the recognised sites, they will be far more knowledgeable. Andy :)

PS I intend (sorry Peter!) to set up a meetup group in the spring specifically for wildlife pix - having spent three years in this neck of the woods, I now know all the places to go in Hampshire where you can get close to birds/butterflies/insects. It will have a strong social element to it as well, like having lunch at a nearby pub after a mornings shoot, that type of thing. If that appeals, let me know and spread the word! Andy :)

Langstone is my second home, I can give a bit of guidance on the day. Expect lots of wildfowl (usually just out of reach with a 400mm!), mainly guls and terns, mixed in with a resident egret (if you look in the right place), oystercatchers, curlews, ducks (!) and others depending on when we go. The billy trail itself is good for hedgerow butterflies in the warmer months. Dont forget to bring some bread and get the guls within feet of you :)
