Beautiful Burma

  • Needs a location

  • Burma, or Myanmar as it's officially now known, has opened up to tourism relatively recently, so it's best to visit sooner rather than later while it's still unspoilt.

Nothing about this trip will be set until we get a group of people together to decide when and for how long to go, what to see etc. Nov-Jan are supposed to be the best months, with Nov probably being greener but maybe slightly wetter. I haven't set payment as there will be a lot of work to do up front before things are finalised!

You need to take a test in Burma in order to drive there, so it might be best if we came up with an itinerary and got a local company to arrange things for us. There is a wide range of accommodation, from staying with a local family to posh hotels (many owned by the military!)

    Things to see/photograph include:

    • The temple complex of Bagan (pictured)

    • Lake Inle, with its leg-rowing fishermen and Nampan stilt village

    • Colourful street markets

    • The ruined city of Ava

    • Ubein bridge, the world's longest teak bridge and a great sunset shot

    • Pindaya cave temples

    •  Ornate monasteries, eg Shwe Hin Bin and Shwe Yan Pyay

    • Temples of Saigang hill

    • Enormous reclining buddhas (if that's your thing!)

    • Mount Popa, a temple-topped extinct volcano

    • Mandalay fort & moat (good for sunset reflections)

    • The contrasting structures at Mingun - a beautifully intricate white pagoda and a monumental stone stupa base

    • The city of Yangon (was Rangoon) - huge golden stupas, street life etc

    • Beautiful countryside, eg around H'Pa-an, with its rice paddies, limestone caves (containing temples), curious inverted boulder (supporting a temple), mountains (topped with temples), monkeys, and thousands of bats (possibly living in temples!)

I've added myself to the waiting list, I have a friend who lives out there if you need any info, regardless of a spot becoming available or not.

Hi all. Just to let you know that it will be a while before I set anything up to start discussing things. I have a few more trips to arrange first and then I need to do more research so that we have something to discuss! At the moment I am thinking it will be a trip of 2-3 weeks, and cost could be ~1-2 k (judging by photography tours which mostly seem to be 2-5k, but use expensive hotels and of course you pay for the assistance).

I would be interested if it was late next year or 2018:)

I would love to go on this trip! When would we actually have to start paying anything for it? I won't have any money until at least next year, but if it's more than 12 months away... Also, I was speaking to a friend who has been to Myanmar, who says that the bus system is quite comfortable, so you could consider that for getting around as well.

Thanks. If I have until next summer-ish to pay anything then that's great. Thanks for adding me ☺ I can ask my friend more questions about travelling in Myanmar if needed.

Hi Esther, I visited about 4 years ago and it is an amazing place. Happy to share information and photos. I went with Explore who are good value for money. Domestic flights are interesting and fairly safe.

Hi Karen, yes I got the year wrong initially! It's the date of travel, but is just a placeholder - it will happen sometime between Nov-Jan. I'll set up some meetings to discuss it when we've got a group together and I've had a chance to come up with some things to discuss :)

Oops, it was supposed to be 2017! Glad you commented or it could have been a while before I noticed :) Have changed the date, sorry for the confusion.
