A casual gathering of lettering, good conversation and sketchbooks

Aloha lettererers!

If you missed last meetup and are itching to find out this month's homework, without further ado, we present to you:

Meetup #5: Anything Helps
Guest hosted by Rene Cruz and Katy Holton

It started with an Instagram post that Rene stumbled upon — a pile of homeless signs. We got to thinking about how every homeless sign is essentially a handwritten expression of vulnerability. There is a kind of craft in each homeless person's handwriting, personality, pleas and hidden stories that are translated most often through found objects like a marker and piece of cardboard.

This month:
We're asking you to create your own "help" sign stating what you need help with in your own personal life. It could be a habit, a vice, or even as simple as putting dirty clothes in the hamper; whatever it is, it should be something you struggle or need help with.

We encourage y'all to use the tools that a homeless person would. This assignment is meant to be a personal challenge. Face it and embrace it!

Ready... Set... Bonus points for thriftiness,
-Katy, Tim and Rene

This past weekend, Katy and I met the self-proclaimed "mayor of Hermann Park" –– Holly Orange. He lives in the park with a small family and helps keep the area clean in exchange for some of the uneaten food at Miller Outdoor Theater. It was a rare occasion in which I couldn't resist the urge to give him a dollar when he asked for help. Not because of the 5 minutes he spent telling us a little about his story, but because of the 10 minutes he spent genuinely interested in what we were doing. Also we got his cell phone number. A homeless man with a cell phone? If you're ever in the area and you get approached by a friendly older man in a yellow reflective vest... give him a minute of your time...he's an interesting gent and I bet he has plenty more stories to tell. And then ask him why he has a cell phone and please let us know :)

Are we moving to Tuesdays on the regular, now?

Not permanently, no... it was the better option for the venue, and it also gives some opportunity to those that couldn't make Wednesdays previously, but we'll most likely switch it up and try to accommodate each month as best we can!
