One-Day 20+ Mile Presidential Range Traverse (NH)

“Hiking the Presidential Range from end to end is one of the United States’ classic treks...What is great about this trip is you can visit as many of the major summits as you want, bagging up to eight 4,000-footers. Even if you choose to skip the summits, you will have an incredible hike above treeline, peering into glacial cirques, taking in views that stretch from horizon to horizon, and encountering alpine plant species that are more common on the tundra of northern Canada than in New England.”
Trails.com on the Presidential Traverse

Trekking through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Northeast, we'll sweat our way up boulder-strewn trails and through windswept ridges.

In this ~22-mile traverse through the White Mountains of NH, we’ll hit up to 11 summits, from north to south:
*Madison
*Adams
*Jefferson
*Clay
*Washington
*Monroe
*Franklin
*Eisenhower
*Pierce
*Jackson
*Webster

(If we hit bad weather or fall far behind schedule, we’ll reduce our mileage, most likely by cutting the last 2 peaks. Our minimal traverse will cover ~20 miles.)

Total elevation gain: 9,000-10,000 feet.

PLAN
As early as we can get off work Fri. afternoon, we'll carpool ~-6 to 7 hrs to New Hampshire and stay at a hostel/motel. Trip members, leave work early (no later than 3pm). We’d like to arrive in the Whites by 10pm. We’ll shuttle our cars then, so that we can get an early start for our Sat. hike.
Sat at 5am., after heading over to our northern trailhead, we’ll start our hike up Madison. After our 12-16+ hour adventure, we’ll shuttle our cars and grab a bite. Around Sun. noon, we'll start driving back to NYC, arriving by evening.

WHO
Advanced hikers only.

You must:

* Have the strength / conditioning / experience to hike at a steady pace (w/few stops) for at least 12 hrs. Our 22-miler on Sat. is suitable for only extremely fit hikers. Those who are not conditioned, please sign up for other trips.
* Be able to handle steep, seemingly endless rocky sections -- ascents as well as descents. Rock scrambling required.
* Have the fortitude (as well as the gear) to endure some of the most extreme weather in the NE : Blizzards are common above timberline.

COSTS
Hostel/motel fee (Fri. and Sat. nights): $50-$100 (both nights). Gas + tolls: ~$50-$60+. White Mountain National Forest parking fee: $6 (shared).

GEAR / FOOD / WATER
Waterproof boots / trail runners. Raingear / gloves / beanie or balaclava. Headlamp or flashlight. Water filter / chemicals.

In terms of carpooling, I can leave Bridgeport CT as early as 3pm, its a 5 hr ride from there to Gorham and I have room for 2 passengers. I would be willing to pickup at Metro North Bridgeport station if that is the only option left for someone coming from NYC.

    Just a heads up:
I reserved a hotel room (2 queen size beds) at the Mt Madison Inn in Gorham (they let you cancel up to May 29th).

Rooms are starting to fill in Gorham

Hey Don, what was the name of the organization that wrote the connecticut hike book?

      June 1, 2014

    • Donald B.

Hey Greg, Connecticut Forest & Park Association or CFPA. They print two books The East Walk Book and the West Walk Book. Most people find the East Book more useful only because we like the East trails better.

What time are we starting tomorrow? 5am?

    May 30, 2014

  • Chris J

Emily and I backpacked the Presidential range Friday into Monday. The only place where I felt traction was mandatory was Madison Gulf, which I don't think you are taking. Other than that, you could get around the ice in the middle of the trail.

    May 30, 2014

    • Chris J

I would say traction is optional. Take it if you lean towards to cautious side.

    Hi Billy:
I went on a hike today with my friend Ginneth (organizer of HVH) and I also met your friend Eric Ornter (organizer of HVH events also)- he was leading the hike.
It was a super great hike with Eric and it was nice to meet other hikers from your group!

What is the time you suggest we get to Secaucus Jct train station? Kasia

Billy or anyone else, do you think we will need micro spikes?

  • Siddhartha

Hi Billy, Greg, Sorry for the very late notice, but I would need to cancel this weekends hiking plans as a friend is coming into town who I need to meet. I very much wanted to go but it does not seem possible at this point. I hope this does not change the plans that you have made. Hope to see you in another hike.

    • Greg

No problem Sid, sorry you couldn't make it I was looking forward to catching up with you this Saturday.

    • Siddhartha

Hi Greg, I was very much looking forward to meeting up too. I would have loved to meet with you and Billy and the others. But this weekend just seems impossible for a hike now. Hope we meet up in the trails soon!

I'll be driving up; likely from central NJ; with pickup available at Secaucus Jct train station at 3pm. Room for 3 more.

I haven't heard from Shawn. Lets meet at Secaucus Jct at 1pm. This will put us in line with Greg as well.

Hey Billy, could you send a short text so we have a way of getting in touch if we need to on Friday? Thanks! [masked]

Is anyone else driving? Right now I only see posts from myself and Greg. We'll need at least one more driver to get everyone up to NH.

Sadly can't make it. Enjoy everyone!

Please update your RSVPs. Change your RSVP if you are no longer able to attend. I know plans change over time and this one was planned a long time in advance. Now is the time to confirm your RSVP or give your spot up to someone on the waiting list.

Sorry guys but I'm bailing on this one. I was on the waitlist for awhile so I decided to run the same hike for the NY/NJ Chapter of the AMC in June.

I think I'm going to do this another weekend later in the summer. Have fun!

    March 19, 2014

  • Stephanie

There's quite a long wait list here, so it seems like there's enough interest for another trip. Any chance of that happening? I'd love to do this!

    1 · March 4, 2014

Please create another event !!!! Thanks

      March 5, 2014

    • Billy

Hello everyone on the waiting list. I am happy to duplicate this event on another date. However, I will not lead it twice. For this to happen again someone else needs to agree to lead the hike. Also, it's common for numbers to change greatly on day hikes. I've seen RVSP numbers drop in 1/2 by start time.

      1 · March 7, 2014

  • Billy

Had to move this to one week earlier due to a big vacation conflict. Please update your RSVPs. I hope you all still can make it. If someone else wants to lead this again the following weekend let me know. I also think we can increase the group size for this trip. 10 is the limit for backpacking; not sure if it's the same for day hiking; also on this type of trip we will not be together all day so effectively in smaller groups anyway; hiker's finish times can vary by 4+ hours.

  • Jim G.

Can you setup a second trip for the following weekend? There seems to be plenty of interest. Also, has anyone thought about doing this in the winter?

    January 16, 2014

  • PK

Any chance of doing this in May? Would love to join but I tentatively have a big race a few days prior. I'd be interested in giving this (or Devils Path) a one day go in May if anyone is interested.
