An important note before we introduce ourselves: We stand with the trans community and believe that Black lives matter. We intend for this to be a safe, inclusive, and diverse space and we strive to be allies for any and all marginalized communities.
Welcome to Harry Potter and the Sacred Text: Central NJ (a.k.a. the New Jersey Nifflers)!
This is a local group for the Harry Potter and the Sacred Text podcast. While being a listener to the podcast isn't a requirement, we definitely encourage it! We will aim to have a similar format and will to do similar spiritual readings of the Harry Potter series as found on the podcast. Normally our meetups rotate between the Whole Foods in Bound Brook/Bridgewater and the Panera Bread off Centennial Ave in Piscataway, however we are meeting virtually on Zoom while quarantining and practicing social distancing. We meet every other week. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions!
Our Group Norms:
⚡ We welcome newcomers ⚡ We are a conscientious community ⚡ We value reflection and deep thought ⚡ We engage in respectful conversations with sensitivity ⚡ We have fun and escape into the magic of the Wizarding World together!
What does it mean to treat a text as Sacred?
1. Trust the text: The text is not just entertainment. The more time we give to the text, the more blessings and rewards it gives us. It is not perfect, but it is worthy of our attention and contemplation. 2. Read with rigor and ritual: The text in and of itself is not sacred, but it is made so through our rigorous engagement. We believe we can glean wisdom and guidance for our day-to-day lives from its pages. 3. Read in a community: Scholars of religion explain that what makes a text sacred is not the text itself, but the community of readers that proclaim it as such. The same applies for us as we embark on this journey with the Harry Potter series together.
(A word about potentially triggering conversations: While we respectfully engage in conversation, sensitive or triggering topics may arise. If a topic comes up that is triggering for you, feel free to do what you need in the moment to help yourself. Like a good yoga practice, we encourage stretching and pushing yourself, but not at the expense of getting hurt.)
From the HPST website: "This podcast creates time in your week to think about life’s big questions. Because reading fiction doesn’t help us escape the world, it helps us live in it. Each week, we explore a central theme through which to explore the characters and context, always grounding ourselves in the text. We'll engage in traditional forms of sacred reading to unearth the hidden gifts within even the most mundane sentences. On this podcast, we ask: What if we read the books we love as if they were sacred texts?"
