Hartford Area Humanists next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, August 28 at Wood-n-Tap in Rocky Hill. Join us for drinks and conversation at 6:30 pm. A member reading, a brief business meeting, dinner, and our guest speaker will all start at 7:00 pm.
This month, our guest speaker will be Julia Hanway, National Speaker's Bureau Coordinator for Final Exit Network.
Final Exit Network is an organization of 3,000 like-minded individuals who believe that it is a personal, First Amendment-protected right to choose how much suffering an individual must endure because of a terminal illness or unbearable, untreatable pain, and that each individual should be allowed not only to choose when to die, but who should be present, and to die peacefully in their own home, if they choose.
The vision of Final Exit Network is that any competent person who is unbearably suffering from an intractable medical condition has the option to die legally and peacefully. The organization's mission is to educate qualified individuals in practical, peaceful ways to end their lives. The Network offers a compassionate bedside presence and defends each suffering individual's right to choose that option.
This discussion will explore current laws, your ability to make choices in Connecticut and what you can practically do to protect your own personal right to a peaceful death through discussions with your family and your doctor, including how to plan for dementia and Alzheimer's and to be sure that you have a health care surrogate who will respect and honor your wishes.
