The Humanist Dinner Club will be meeting on Thursday, December 13. We will be discussing John Allen Chau, the missionary who was killed on an isolated island in the Indian Ocean when he tried to introduce Christianity to a remote tribe.
Participants are asked to do some preparation before the discussion. The total time required should be less than a half-hour.
First, if you are not already familiar with Mr. Chau's story, start with this Guardian article detailing what happened: https://tinyurl.com/y8jlma38
Then, read this essay in Slate: Martyr or "American Dickhead"?: https://tinyurl.com/y9voejvr
Then, read these reactions to Chau's death written by others who have engaged in Mission work, as compiled by the NY Times: https://tinyurl.com/yajrpjov
Please come by 6:30 pm so that we can all get our orders placed and start the conversation by 6:45. The meeting will end promptly at 8:30 pm
Also, please RSVP so that we know how many people to expect - we divide the group up into smaller groups of about 6-8 participants to ensure that everyone gets a chance to participate.
Also, for the past couple of years, we have given our regular waitress, Ritza, a card stuffed w/ cash donated by our regular attendees. If anyone wishes to contribute but cannot personally attend, message Dan, and he can add your contribution to the total.
