Mt Ka'ala! (Advanced) and Farewell to Jorge.

Join me for this Farewell Hike with Jorge Bermudez

What?  Jorge is Leaving?  Noooooo...

Jorge Bermudez is returning to the Mainland, let's bid him Adios and Aloha in this Farewell Hike.  It's going to be a tough but amazing hike especially with the weather that looks promising.

For everyone curious about what Jorge's next step is, join us at the hike or picnic to find out.

We all knew this day would probably come but not expected this soon!

After the hike, we will meet at Pokai Beach Park for a BBQ picnic.  If you want to skip right to the picnic, plan on being at Pokai Beach Park around 4 p.m.

Trail length : 8 Miles, 6 hours round trip.

Type: Out and Back

Difficulty: Strenuous with 3500+ foot ascent

Dangers: Mud, cliffs, rain, rocks, dehydration

Dogs: Dogs not allowed due to large boldering and narrow ridge trails

Time: About 6-7 hours total

You must RSVP to attend this event, no exceptions.

Description: Here's the scoop on this adventurous hike. This hike climbs to Oahu's highest point which is approx. 4000'. If the weather is clear, you can see the North Shore, west Oahu, Wahiawa Plains, and out to Waikiki. At the summit, there is a boardwalk that crosses a bog that houses an environment rich in native plants.

This is NOT a hike for beginners. As stated above this is an moderate++ to advanced hike because of the length, the altitude gain, and some minor bouldering. This hike will test your endurance and fear of heights just bit (which I have, that's why I need many brave souls to join me!!!)

Please bring adequate water (2 liters minimum), snacks, a light lunch to eat at the top. Also, a light jacket or windbreaker is recommended as it can get windy and chilly at the summit. Additional items you may want to consider: long pants, gloves, shoe spikes (if you have them), sunblock, insect repellent, hat, sunglasses.

MOST IMPORTANT: A BIG SMILE, one that will last at least for 7 hours! :)

Directions to  meeting place
Take the H1 from town West.  Continue onto I-H-201 W (signs for Interstate H201 W/Fort Shafter/Aiea)  Take the Interstate H1 W exit toward Pearl City for about another 13 miles.  Continue onto HI-93 W for about ten miles.  Turn left onto Wiaanae Valley Road, and park in the parking lot.

We will meet and carpool from Pokai Bay Beach Park (may also be called Leeward Coast Park). Parking lot there is by the corner of Bayview St. and Waianae Valley Rd. We will leave from here no later than 8:45 and head over to the gate or trailhead at the other end of Waianae Valley Rd.

Remember: Walking around outdoors and hiking carries inherent risks, like sun burn, bee sting, falling down, broken bones, twisted ankle, falling off cliffs, birds pooping on you. Always, Hike within your limits, know your surrounding, have a plan, go with a partner. Carry extra water.

Bob, any suggestion on car pickup arrangement after the Aala hike as some of us are heading to the pot luck and sunset hike afterwards?

    July 14, 2014

    • Jorge

We will carpool from the beach park to the trail head of both the morning hike to Kaala and the sunset hike later after the picnic. Plenty of parking at the park.

      July 14, 2014

  • Nick

Curious. Is the hike covered at all and are there streams? Thinking about getting a water filter pump for fun.

    July 14, 2014

    • Jorge

Nick, there is cover it's not as wide open as last weeks. No stream crossings. Definitely great views so bring camera!!! :)

Bob, thanks for setting this up for me, very nice!
Just want to say that, although yes, I will be leaving Hawaii this hike is definitely not about me. It's about conquering the highest peak on Oahu!!! For those that haven't done it, it's a must do at least once and I want to be there to see you do it! The rewards will be beautiful views of North Shore and Waianae Valley! Once down, lets fill our bellies with yummy food, swim in the largest pool i've ever seen known as the Pacific Ocean, plenty of room for everyone at one time! :)
Then....at around 530pm. for all those that didn't hike to the top of Mt Kaala... (and those that did and still have energy left) lets head on over down the Rd and do Puu O hulu trail for a sunset hike. RVSP to this easy hike separately!

I'm pumped and hope you are too! :)

    2 · July 14, 2014

    • Cristy C.

oh i'll join the Pu'u o hulu if ever ur doin it

      1 · July 14, 2014

    • Jorge

Cristy, yes, we'll be doing the Pu'u hulu as a sunset hike this same day! So come prepared for that one! :)

I thought we were gonna do Kealia/Kouapaka trails. I will be at the picnic party. I can bring chicken, noodles, maybe 1 more main dish, utensils, and will bake Pistachio cake. If someone has cooler bring with you and I can bring cold sodas/water.

Jorge! We are going to miss you! I don't know how many times I'd be hiking and out of the blue you'd just appear on one of your solo runs! Thanks for your enthusiasm and being an all around great ride! And stay out of helicopters in Seattle!
