Whether you're a current or aspiring strength coach, personal trainer, fitness professional, health coach, or exercise physiologist--or you're just interested in the intricacies of the human body--here the deal: there's a problem with the industry, isn't there?
Nobody is on the same page.
Think about it: you go to your local gym and they have one methodology, and you walk right down the street and hear something entirely different. Some have a focus on strength training, others are endurance. You'll hear the term 'functional fitness' a lot, though everyone has a different definition of exactly what that means. If you're a new client at one gym they might have you lift on the first day, while at other gyms, you have to wait a month before you can even think about touching a barbell.
Needless to say, there's a lot of confusion. And that's precisely the purpose of this Meetup. Here's what I'm offering: a 9 week Coach Education Curriculum based on the facts. Because there are facts. The human body operates on a sound set of principles and it has for hundreds of thousands of years. This Meetup isn't about the latest and greatest in the field, nor is it a competition about which exercise modality is best. We're going back to the basics and following the science. Because as an industry we should all be reading from the same playbook, not having a bro-science argument about what's best.
Who am I to think I can write a Coach Education Curriculum to unite the masses? I'm someone who preaches the fundamentals. I've been in this field for over a decade, and I've worked with kindergartners all the way to professional athletes. I have a Master's in Exercise Science. And above and beyond all that, I want the health/fitness/exercise industry to treat their coaches the same way other fields treat their employees: as professionals. Because we are professionals, those of us who understand that a $500 certification and acronyms next to your name isn't the end result but the first step in a very, very long staircase. That's what the Coach Education Curriculum is for, those individuals who are willing to go back to page one and build on the basics.
Here's an overview of what you'll learn: - A brief history of exercise physiology - Hans Selye and the GAS - An introduction to the musculoskeletal system - The Force-Velocity Curve - Muscle actions - An introduction to bioenergetics - An introduction to hemodynamics - Training methods (hypertrophy, strength, speed, etc) - Prioritization models - Ergogenic aids - An introduction to programming, culminating with you writing your own program and defending it to the group
If you've ever been interested in learning more about the fundamentals of the human body, or you're thinking about entering this industry, or you've been in the field a while but are looking to further your education, this Meetup is for you!
The first meeting will be held the week of the 20th. Location and times to follow soon once we get a rough idea of how many people are interested.
