What we're about

This meetup is open to residents of Shawnigan Lake and the surrounding communities of the Cowichan Valley.

We will be participating in active events together in our community, such as easy local hikes, bike rides and outdoor fitness walking using Urban Walking Poles (similar to Nordic Poles). Pole walking is great for increasing the cardio fitness benefits of a regular walking routine. In winter, we might meet at Kerry Park for a skating party with hot chocolate afterwards.

There will be opportunities to join educational and sharing events on different health topics such as Headache Management, Sleep Hygiene, Living with Chronic Pain, Mental Health and Wellness, Goal Setting, Behaviour Change, and Fitness Education and Guidelines for different age groups, including Weight Loss Programs, Body Transformation Challenges, and Essential Exercises for the 3rd Age.

There will be opportunities to attend classes on incorporating essential oils into your self-care, health care and the health care of your family, from babies to the elderly. As well there will be some fun opportunities to create wonderful oil blends of your own and incorporate them into personalized roller bottles, misting bottles, salves, bath bombs and salts - if you can dream it, you can make it! And, all with super-natural healthy ingredients. There may be cooking parties to experiment with different healthy recipes and the opportunity to sit down to the dinner table together after the meal preparations and enjoy the communal fare. And in the summertime? Healthy family picnics and even outdoor Yoga in the Pavilion.

And we can also explore, learn and share experiences with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), meditation, self-directed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy (ET), Goal-Based Behaviour Modification and everyday practical Breathing and Relaxation Strategies. Guest speakers will be invited to attend and share from their areas of expertise and sometimes we might just get together for a night of watching TED talks together, which of course will spark appropriately healthy debate and conversation. When Guest speakers are invited there may be a fee for donation so the speaker receives an honorarium.

Note: Kim (the organizer) is a CanFitPro Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Older Adult Fitness Specialist, a Certified Urban Poling Coach, a DoTerra Essential Oils Wellness Advocate and an Occupational Therapist with 40 years experience working in hospitals, clinics, and in the community, assisting adults of all ages and abilities to maximize their abilities and enjoy a good quality of life no matter their circumstances. She has worked with people with Chronic Degenerative Disease, Arthritis, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Spinal Cord and other Neurological conditions. More recently she has been specializing in Health and Wellness for an Ageing Population, Cognitive Rehabilitation and Mental Health Conditions. She is currently pursuing further education in the use of MBSR, CBT and other practical interventions for sub-acute Anxiety, Depression, PTSD and other mental health concerns.

Kim is not new to meetup, in fact in 2008 when she lived in North Vancouver she founded a social meetup called The North Shore Social Club, and she co-organized it until she moved to Shawnigan in 2012. The group is now 700+ members strong.
