What we're about

We want you to know that you are not alone with hearing loss! Nearly 50 million Americans—1 out of every 10 people, including 2.7 million veterans and 1 in 5 teens—has some degree of hearing loss, which impacts every aspect of our lives.

The primary purpose of Hearing Loss Association of America-Los Angeles is to empower our community and erase the stigma of hearing loss through information, education, advocacy, and mutual support. Professionals, college students, seniors, veterans, spouses, and families of children with hearing loss are all encouraged to attend meetings and join our chapter. We welcome anyone, whether you are adjusting to a new hearing loss or have had one all your life...from mild to moderate to severe...if you wear hearing aids, cochlear implants, or are getting by without any equipment at all.

Most members manage our communications using some combination of hearing devices and assistive technology, personal amplification systems, lip reading, captioning, and induction loops. Meetings are always looped (for T-coil wearers) and have real-time live captions (CART) that you can read to follow along with each speaker — NO ASL PROVIDED.

At our monthly meetings, chapter members and visitors have an opportunity to learn from expert guest speakers, ask questions, participate in interactive rap sessions, communicate about their experiences, participate in social events, and meet others who live with this challenging condition. We also strive to sensitize the general population about the special needs of those with hearing loss, its nature and causes.

We meet once a month, usually on the 4th Saturday morning, at the Sherman Oaks Library. A wide range of hearing loss-related topics are addressed, including assistive technology, hearing health, communication tips, coping and parenting strategies, and personal/professional/government advocacy. Some months we hold social events or outings instead. See Upcoming Events for details on our next gathering!

Hearing Loss Association of America (http://www.hearingloss.org) is the nation’s largest organization for people with hearing loss. HLAA-Los Angeles (http://www.hlaa-la.org) is one of approximately 200 chapters nationwide that shares the mission of our national organization. We look forward to meeting you!
