This event will be rescheduled in the event of rain.

East Chickamauga Creek Loop

Total distance: 6.3 miles

Hiking time: 3.5 hours
Vertical rise: 550 feet
Rating: Moderate

HOW TO GET THERE
From Exit 320 on 1-75, take GA 136 west for 18 miles to Ponder Creek Road-Turn right and go 0.6 mile to Forest Road 219. Veer right onto FR 219 for 1.7 miles to dead-end
at the trailhead parking area.

This area is made up of two mountain ridges which parallel one another in a north-south direction. Another ridge connects the two, forming an “H” pattern, and dividing the valley between them. There are two separate streams within this natural drainage; Ponder Creek, which flows south, and East Chickamauga Creek, which flows north.

From the small parking area, the trail leads to a small bridge which crosses Ponder Creek. When you cross the bridge, you can go either left or right on the loop trail.  We will go right and following the white blazes along the trail.

After a while, the trail begins an easy climb to a forest service road, then drops back down, and follows East Chickamauga Creek through the northern part of the valley. After crossing the valley, the trail begins to climb the ridge on the east side of the valley. This trail is well marked with white blazes, but at times it crosses and even merges with old road beds which use yellow and blue blazes.

The trail gradually climbs along the side of the ridge to the top, then follows the ridge crest. After passing under some power lines, the trail begins a gradual descent into the valley and back to the starting point.

This trail has moderate elevation gain.  There are over 20 stream crossings on the trail, the widest one is pictured below.  This area is very lush with a nice variety of plant life along the trail.  Wildflowers are said to be abundant in the area.

Dogs must be leashed.  Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.  This hike is not recommended for young children.  There are several creek crossings-bring appropriate shoes and hiking poles.

You will need food and water.

There are no facilities at this location so plan accordingly.

Feel free to arrange carpooling.  I will wait 10 minutes for arrivals, if you are running late, send a message.

We are opening the bank tomorrow for the first time ever so I will not be able to attend. I hope everyone has a great time on an awesome hike! My grandmother's home is about 3/10 of a mile past the logging road turn on Ponder Creek. Hate to miss again!!

Sorry i had to change my RSVP. I was looking forward to this hike yet the weather conditions and some events that occurred will not make it possible for us to attend this one. Looking forward to the next hike.
