Beginner and Sociables Evening Hike: Croton Point (moved from 9/11 due to heat)

  • Sep 12, 2013 · 6:15 PM
  • Croton Point park - Main parking lot

[Update: 9/11/[masked] pm.  Due to the oppressive temperatures today, and heat index advisory in affect, I am moving this hike to Thursday at 6.15 pm]

With the evening drawing in earlier in and earlier this will likely be our last evening hike at Croton for the year.  I hope you can join us!

Let's explore Croton park again, we will take slightly different routes each time we go..... we will meetup at the park's main parking lot and we will hike for about an hour.  We will see a combination of history and nature, and hopefully see the sunset over the Hudson.  Out of the park by dusk.

Hike info

Terrain: Easy, with a couple of smaller hills. A mix of gravel roads, grass and woodland trails.

Distance: ~ 2-3 miles

Pace: Relaxed/Moderate (everyone will go at their own pace and we will regroup along the way to make sure no one gets left behind.  If you are looking for a stroll though this is probably not for you, we don't have much daylight so we will need to keep a good walking pace).

Dogs: Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash. Owners should find out and respect the rules of the park, and follow requests made by the organizers. Please make sure you bring water for your dog.

Children: Children are welcome on this hike if accompanied by an adult who will take full responsibility for them. They need to be also of good nature - no complaining! If you wish to bring a child please include them as a guest in your RSVP.

Prior to RSVP'ing please make sure you understand the group's guidelines for Attendance and RSVP etiquette.

What to bring and wear:
Bring water/snacks.  I would recommend wearing hiking boots or sneakers.

Meeting point:
Park at the main parking lot of the park. Drive to the end of Croton point ave, past a toll booth, and then straight at the little roundabout.   Parking will be on your left, meet at the far end of the lot towards the gazebo.

Cancellation notices
I will be monitoring the weather prior to the hike and if conditions are not good the hike is subject to cancellation. Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving for the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 5 pm if required.

Can I become a weather man rather than meetup organizerm, that way I can make totally incorrect calls and get paid for it! The forecast at the cancellation time (5 pm) was still 0-5% precipitation down in Croton and based on there being still more than a dozen people signed up at that time I figured let's give it a shot. The weather was rather dramatic - but we stil had a good time chatting and munching on the goodies Liam and Una brought.

If I could ask that members update their RSVP prior to the cancellation time noted in the event description as I do factor that in when making the go/no go decision on a event.

Let's hope they get the forecast a little more accurate for our next adventure.
