This 9 miles loop hike has about 1000 FEET of elevation and brings us to the beautiful redwoods of Santa Cruz county. This hike is in the NORTHERN part of Henry Cowell Redwoods SP. The terrain is rugged and there are NO FACILITIES, so be prepared! Keep in mind that the distance and elevation will make this a somewhat challenging hike. If you are new to hiking, please consider a different hike for your first time out with us.
Facilities are limited so be sure to bring WATER, snacks and an extra layer (like a windbreaker)
The map address of the trailhead is APPROXIMATE so be sure to use the text-based description in addition to the map in this link.
The roads to this trailhead are scenic, windy, and can be slow. Drive safely and plan on some extra driving time on hike morning.
We are really looking forward to seeing YOU there.
My favorite park in Santa Cruz county because of its unrivaled beauty. The only other park that comes close to this is Uvas Creek Park in the hills behind San Jose. Bring your camera because Fall Creek is amazing.
Among the many reasons I love this park are the old oak forest, the redwood forest, the old lime kilns, and how it stays so cool even on the hottest days.
You'll see dogs and bikes here occasionally but they are, in fact ,not allowed so please leave them at home. No pets, please.
Fewer cars at the trail head is always happiness. Meetup does not organize carpools; however we are a friendly group with lots of folks who are interested in sharing rides. If you'd like to offer a ride, please leave a comment in your RSVP letting folks know where you're coming from and how many spaces there are. If you'd like to ride as a passenger, it is YOUR JOB to check the website RSVP list and contact any of the nice people offering a ride to see if they still have a space for you. If you're a passenger and your plans change, please be sure to let the driver know.
From CA 17 in Santa Clara County, drive southwest. In Scotts Valley, exit Mount Hermon Road. Drive northwest on Mount Hermon Road about 3.5 miles. When Mount Hermon Road ends at Graham Hill Road, turn right. After just 0.1 mile, Graham Hill Road ends at a traffic light at CA 9 in Felton. Continue straight on Felton Empire Road. Drive about 0.6 mile on Felton Empire Road, and turn right into the poorly signed trail head.
TRAIL HEAD DETAILS:
Fall Creek Unit is separate from the rest of Henry Cowell and does not charge an entrance or parking fee. At Fall Creek Unit, there are no facilities: no drinking water, restrooms, or maps. There is parking for about 25 vehicles in a dirt lot. No designated handicapped parking, and trails are not suitable to wheelchairs. There is no direct public transportation to the park. Santa Cruz Metro bus #34 stops on highway 9, less than 1 mile from the trail head.
Please be aware that we expect you to take responsibility for your safety while we are out on the trails. This means being prepared with adequate hiking gear and making sure the difficulty level of the event IS NOT beyond the limits of your health & conditioning. We understand that your "Yes" RSVP to this event means you accept this.
