Chilterns, Chequers and Coombe Hill double cross with pub lunch- 11 miles  & 350 m total ascent
Saturday, February 8th, 2014- Wendover Train Station- Depart 11:00 am

HIKE
The Chilterns has been designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty. It is also an area with plenty of modest hills. As always the route will have lots of ups and down including Coombe Hill, which is 260 m above sea level and offers splendid views a good leg workout. We have the pleasure of hiking up to the top of Coombe Hill twice on two different paths. The trail also crosses Chequers, the official country residence of the British Prime Minster. On the last leg of the route we stop for a late lunch at a local Chiltern’s pub with a quirky political theme. We will order from the informal light bar menu all priced under £10 After lunch it is only a few miles back to the train station. The trail crosses through woodland and can seem remote at times. Be prepared for some adventurous paths and natural loo stops. Only for experienced hikers who are happy with a brisk pace. If we are lucky we may spot one of the Red Kites that tend to fly over the Chilterns. For this hike we travel independently and meet at Wendover station in the Chilterns to give you the option to drive or take the train from different locations.
COST: £9.50 for guided hike by a leader with an outdoor first aid certification (lunch and train fare not included)

LUNCH -STRICTLY Pub lunch as it is a tiny local pub and and I have had to put a deposit to guarantee 20 orders. Sorry no packed lunches this time. Thanks.

TRAINS:
Depart Marylebone train station 10:12 am and arrival at Wendover 10:59. (Train fare is not included) Please arrive 15-20 minutes before. Journey time to the Chilterns is 47 minutes
Return trains are at  17:13, 17:43 and 18:13pm. There are later trains for those of you who can’t escape the pub on time.
Please post a message to meet at Marylebone Station if you would like to form a group of 4 to organise your own group saver. Off peak fare is £15.80 with an individual day return and half of that if you have a group of 4. I will be leaving from Wimbledon so I will meet you at Wendover not Marylebone.

DRIVERS
Driving time is approximately an hour and 20 minutes from central London. We meet at Wendover Station, Pound Street, HP22 6BN. Ample pay parking is available at Wendover station.

Oh no, always wanted to walk the chilterns. All my Saturdays are a bit stuck for a few weeks :(

    January 23, 2014

  • Vanessa L.

I did this walk years ago with friends and it wasn't good day. I've been wanting to do it again to have a more enjoyable day. The weather was awful, with deep mud and it just became an endurance test instead of an enjoyable walk.

  • adrian

This is a great area to walk, but I haven't been for a while. Looking forward to it.
