What we're about
We hike, but we do it with a service project in mind rather than just a hike for exercise or to simply get outdoors. During early 2016, we will work in numerous areas around southern Nevada, with a focus on the Gold Butte region, to locate and knock down illegal mining claim markers. For more information on the marker problem, see:
Most of the hikes will be off-trail and exploratory, so we will never really know how hard the hike will be, but we can do it at our pace and get done what we can.
In addition to service, we anticipate gaining friendship and the opportunity to learn about the ecology of the desert while taking photos of wonderful places and hiking at a moderate pace.
Hiking with a Purpose is a science-informed group and adheres to the social norm that during hikes we do not discuss sex, politics, or religion except by the unanimous consent of the entire hiking party. People who fail to adhere to these policies will be returned to the trailhead to await the return of the hiking party. Dogs must be leashed at all times.
