South Mountains State Park - Moderate to Strenuous (7 miles)

  • South Mountains State Park

3001 South Mountain Park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC (map)

    35.598349 -81.609923

  • Look for the group in the lower trailhead parking lot
  • Nestled deep in the woods, South Mountains State Park is the perfect place to enjoy nature. Here you can see a majestic mountain range peeking out from the gently rolling landscape of the Piedmont.

The park includes elevations up to 3,000 feet, a waterfall dropping 80 feet and more than 40 miles of trails. From equestrian camping to trout fishing, mountain biking to picnicking, a number of activities are available at South Mountains State Park.

Visit one of the state's most rugged parks. Hike the trail to High Shoals Falls to witness the roar of the waterfall as it pours into a large pool.

Each hiker is responsible for their own snacks and water.

    Dogs are allowed. Pet Rules

Directions to SMSP - Click here for a Map & Directions to South Mountains SP from Charlotte SMSP is about 90 minutes (61 miles) from Charlotte.

Click here for a Map of the park

Trail - The most popular trail, High Shoals Falls Loop Trail, travels one mile along the Jacob Fork River to the base of High Shoals Falls, a beautiful crystal-clear waterfall. The trail then continues to the top of the falls before looping around and returning to the picnic area. The terrain can be rugged, so be observant of the trail and wear sturdy shoes.

We'll take the strenuous 2.1 mile Chestnut Knob Trail (each way) which leads to the Jacob Fork River Gorge and Chestnut Knob overlooks. Then come down and doing the 2.7 High Shoals Falls loop for a total of 6.9 very scenic, but challenging miles! Consider this in your preparations. . . should be a great day!

Please feel confident in your ability to handle elevation changes, steps, and a moderate pace if you are attending this hike. Beginners and those with injuries may find some areas challenging.

Where to meet - Enter the park according to the directions on South Mountain Park Ave. Proceed to the last parking lot at the end of the road.  We'll begin hiking at 10:00 am, so please arrange your drive accordingly to make it to the park a few minutes before.

After the hike, we can go for lunch at the nearby Cooksville Grill in Vale, NC. (We went there last time and it was enjoyed by all).  Expect to return to Charlotte by 4 pm.

Carpooling - Look for carpool meeting sites on the group Discussion Board and contact others in your area to make arrangements, either by emailing them directly or posting your needs in the Comments section of the event.

Decided to drop out because of the weather. Hopefully we can go another time. For those still going, have fun and be safe.

David, is it possible that we move this hiking to another weekend? The weather does not seem to be promising this Saturday.

I Agree- rain gear is avail - but uto far to go and if it rains which it looks like it will - dangerous to hikers

UPDATE: I am still seeing warm, but 70% chance of rain on Saturday. That is getting close to the threshold for canceling, but for now, we are ON. If it gets to be 80-90%, I will not take the chance as South Mtn can be slippery on the rock and wood step portions. If you do not hear anything to the contrary between now and Friday night, we are ON!

I am asking again, if you decide not to attend, PLEASE change your RSVP. If your plans change and you've been talking to anyone about carpooling, be polite and contact them regarding your changes. It is aggravating to think you have a plan only to have the person you were counting on not show up.

It would be great if all 100+ attend. I recommend getting to the park early so you have a parking place. Thanks!

Out too because of weather. Since this is my first time at this location I don't know what to expect. If I was familiar with the trail then it might have been a different decision. Safety is more important. Goodluck to all those who make it out there.

Love to go- but considering the weather forecast - not wanting to risk a long drive only to get rained out. I originally offered to carpool- but at this point I am out- will relook at it on Friday night.

I will be there and will have room for one more person in my vehicle. The only issue is we aren't sure if we'll stay to eat afterwards so the rider should be flexible if he/she wants to ride with us. Karen Locey

If like to bring my dog but also want to go for lunch, is there an outside patio where dogs are allowed?

      1 · December 13, 2013

    • David K.

The Cooksville Grill is the closest place to the park, that is why I plan for there. They do not have outside seating (may be chilly that day, too). You won't find many options close to South Mtn, but more when you get back towards civilization. If anyone wants to plan an alternative for the canine crowd, that is fine with me.
