Seven Oaks Preserve Trail, Belmont, NC - 5.5 mi (Easy)

This 2.8 mile (each way) natural surface trail meanders along the shoreline of Lake Wylie.  This trail connects to other trails at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden that creates a five mile loop from the trailhead at the Seven Oaks Preserve Trail.

The preserve protects important sensitive areas around the lake and safeguards wildlife habitat for wild turkeys, turtles and native wildflowers. Seven Oaks Preserve also has some magnificent swamp chestnut oak trees near the lake. Additionally, there are huge tulip poplar trees, great paw paw patches and persimmon trees. Birds you may see or hear: Osprey, kingfishers, pileated woodpeckers and bald eagles.

Let's take a morning to enjoy this new segment of the Carolina Thread Trail system. We will meet at the S. New Hope Rd trailhead and follow the trail to the end, then turn around and return. We could check out the trails into Daniel Stowe, if desired.

======================================

Directions:

I-85,  exit 27 for NC-273 toward Belmont, Mt. Holly. Turn left onto Beatty Drive toward Belmont. After 2 miles, at the end of the road, turn left onto South Central Avenue.  After 4.1 miles, turn right onto Lower Armstrong Road. Continue for 2.4 miles. At the end of the road, turn left onto South New Hope Road. The parking lot and trailhead in on your right.

Notes:

• Leashed dogs are permitted

• Bring your own water and snacks

• Arrive a few minutes before 9:30 so we can start on time.

• Carpool when possible. Use info on the Discussion Board HERE to help.

Hi David, I'd like to meet you at the parking lot at Daniel Stowe since I'm not formiliar with the trails, and don't want to worry about finding a place to park. How long is the connector trail ? What time can I meet you there.

    April 3, 2014

    • David C.

Peggy, we can start at 9:30am; the connector trail intersects the Seven Oaks trail about half a mile from the trail head.

Hi all; This is my first hike with all of you and am thrilled to be a part of the group.
I actually live just about 3 miles down the road - if anybody wants to drive to me, leave their car at my house on Lake Wylie and car pool with me... that's another option.

Hello Pete; here is another suggestion that is worth taking into account. Several are meeting at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens and starting the hike there at 9:30. How about meeting there? Sounds like a good alternative. Here are the instructions I received: Sheena, we can start hiking at 9:30am, since the trails don't connect at the beginning point. There will probably be other people starting from DSBG also, so tell the prospective car pooler about it. The connector trail starts at the back corner of the parking lot, opposite the entrance. See you Saturday!

We could car pool from the Roses Store parking lot, which is just south of I-85 exit 27. I think it is about 5 miles to the park from there.

    March 9, 2014

    • David C.

Caren, I am going to park in the visitors lot at Daniel Stowe BG and use the connector trail to the Seven Oaks trail, which starts at the back corner of the parking lot opposite the entrance. Plenty of free parking here.

Just curious about this since I just joined. This sounds a lot like the "Carolina Thread Trail" ... I walked part of it last weekend. It's in the same location. Does this trail have different names?

      That is correct.

I liked it. Only went about halfway, to where it intersects the southern end of the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens path. It's definitely easy but well-traveled. Very busy - lots of traffic.

Folks, I highly recommend carpooling, as parking is VERY limited at this location. It is a very small parking lot, and this is a very popular place.

I have another commitment that day but I am interested. Do I just check back with the site for next outing or does someone send an email out?

    March 30, 2014

    • David K.

Richard, your best bet is to stay active on the site and check the list of upcoming events. If something catches your eye and you are open to attend, just RSVP that you will come. Then, please be sure you do or change your status to no. Not all events are emailed, so looking at the group main page is the most reliable way for you to keep current. See you on the trail!

    Hi,
I had to cancel my place because I had Rotator Cuff repair surgery on the 17 Feb and I am in a sling until late in April... on pain meds and not allowed to drive. Looking forward to meeting all in the near future.

    March 8, 2014

    • Meg

Sorry to hear that Dorothy- hope you have a speedy recovery!

      March 8, 2014

We've got a large group signed up so far which is great. Parking however is quite limited, so PLEASE carpool if possible. Look forward to seeing everyone!
