Grayson Highlands (VA) State Park to Mount Rogers

Grayson Highlands State Park is next to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in the Jefferson National Forest. Grayson Highlands State Park was originally named Mount Rogers State Park and was established in 1965.

We will begin our hike in Grayson Highlands State Park, connect with the Appalachian Trail and head to the summit of Mount Rogers. The summit is said to be the highest point in Virginia at 5729 feet in elevation.

The summit is covered with a thick spruce-fir forest but don’t be discouraged. Along the way, we’ll see an array of northern hardwoods, beautiful wildflowers, large boulders and magnificent views from cliff tops. The area is home to the wild ponies that roam freely throughout. If we’re lucky, they’ll walk right up to us! Click HERE for a description of the hike.

We’ll picnic along the trail so bring plenty of food/snacks and water.

• Trail: The hike will be 8-10 miles long and the trail is moderate with some strenuous parts. It should take 5 hours to complete. Click HERE for a trail map.

• Drive time from Charlotte is approximately 3 hours so carpool where possible. Carpool where possible using the advice from the Discussion Board HERE.

Expect to return to Charlotte around 6PM.

The views were great. I was on my out the door yesterday when I decided as an afterthought to grab a jacket - smartest afterthought I ever had. Thanks for organizing David

This was my first time to this park. But I'd heard lots about it, so I was interested in planning and doing. I'm glad we got to share the park, the scenery, the uniqueness, and the always excellent company. Yes, it was more strenuous than I expected and my knees are hurting too. . . but we all made it (that I know of)!! Thank you for the positive remarks and for being such a great team!! Who knew about the 40 degree temps and the much chillier wind, but the lingering snow on the grass was certainly a surprise for my shorts and t-shirt wardrobe.

It was 85% strenuous. I don't mean it in a negative way. It is more like a warning to be prepared to climb to the top on rocks and the weather can change unpredictably. All in all it was a fun hike. Don't miss it if the opportunity presents itself. I am glad I did it.

So yeah, I went to work for a couple hours this morning to make up some time. Even though I'm off now, I don't think I'll get to the destination by 10. I'll try to do something another time.

Hi! I am visiting Charlotte for a work conference and have Saturday free. I would love to tag along on this hike and carpool with someone! (Rental cars get expensive) I can meet at Kohls Saturday morning. Let me know if anyone has extra room! Thanks!

    May 1, 2014

    • David K.

Hi Hannah. I'm glad you commented. The Kohl's I was talking about is in Mooresville, NC 28117. Quite a ways from south Charlotte. However, it is on the way to the hike in VA from Charlotte and you are welcome to meet there if you choose. Otherwise, you will have to arrange a carpool from someone coming from that end of town. If you do come to Mooresville, we need to leave the Kohl's by 7:10 AM.

Has anyone checked the weather for tomorrow's hike? It looks to be cold (59) and possibly rainy. Just a heads up. Also I can meet at the south Charlotte carpool location (Fuel Pizza 4267 Park Rd Charlotte, NC 28209) at 645. Will anyone else be meeting there?

    May 16, 2014

For anyone not accustom to the principles of this group. . . we are a GO for this hike. A few weather maybes do not deter us. . . it only makes the day more interesting!! See youz there!!

For anyone interested in purchasing a Hiking Charlotte/Piedmont t-shirt, I will have them at the hike: short-sleeved are light blue and $10/ea, long-sleeved are green and $15/ea. Sizes available are M-XL at this time (unisex sizing). First come, first served, cash only. Looking forward to the hike tomorrow! :)

    May 16, 2014

For the Mooresville carpoolers. . . I have some riders already (2, I believe, which would leave room for 1 more small person), but will go to Kohl's and see who we have and how we can maximize the cars. I plan to be at the Mooresville Kohl's ready to leave at 7:10am. Look for the white Mustang near the entrance to the lot off of SR 150.

I'm only jumping in here to try to be helpful from my experience. . . it is usually best for someone to just pick a place and time to meet that you think will be convenient for all involved. Then everyone else be there. I have found that you can work out suitable arrangements once you are there and see what your options are. Otherwise, the back and forth gets confusing.
