Latta Plantation - Huntersville (Easy hike)

Location: Latta Plantation Nature Preserve (Charlotte/Mecklenburg County), For Park info: Click HERE

Description: We'll meet at the Latta Plantation Nature/Visitor Center and start hiking at 9:30am. We will traverse parts of several trails in the Preserve to create an easy-to-moderate out and back loop. The trails will pass through sections of woods and open spaces. The hike will take 2 hours +/-.

Each hiker is responsible for their water and snacks.

Dogs ARE allowed, but must be on a six foot leash.

Remember to arrange carpool where possible. Use the Discussion Board post on carpooling for more info.

Directions to the Latta Plantation Nature/Visitor Center:

Traveling north on I-77: Take Exit 16B, Sunset Road West. Follow Sunset Rd. West until the second light and turn right onto Beatties Ford road. Proceed north for 4.8 miles until you reach Sample Road (directly across from Hopewell Presbyterian Church). Turn left on Sample Road (it’s a narrow break in the stone wall).

Traveling south on I-77: Take Exit 23, Huntersville. Turn right off the exit to Gilead Road. Take the third left, McCoy Road. At the stop sign, turn right on Beatties Ford Road. Turn left on Sample Road (it’s a narrow break in the stone wall).

Once past the stone wall entrance, go about half a mile.  Just past the Nature Center inside the park gate, turn right on the gravel road and park at the "Horse Trailer" lot, then walk over to the center and we'll go from there.

NOTE: We may get together for lunch at Lancaster's after the hike, if anyone's interested. They have the best bbq and fried chicken in the area and is worth the visit; beer and drinks are available, too. Hope to see you there!

Nice day for a hike no matter the triathlon that delayed us just a bit. Dave did a great job leading the group! Thanks for organizing :) and lunch at Lancaster's afterwards is ALWAYS a winner too!

Because of the bike racing event, I was not able to get into the park on time to connect with the main group however, I was able to meet up with others who were experiencing the same thing that I did with regards to getting into the park in a timely fashion, parking and meeting up. It was my first time with Meetup and I was so looking forward to paying my $1 and meeting our leader, Mr. David. Nevertheless, I did walk with Melissa Anne, Della, Carol, Barbara, Jason just a few of the members who walked they gave me a very warm welcome and for that I'm grateful! I'm so looking forward to my next Meetup!

Anyone from Mooresville want to carpool from Kohl's? If so, I'll see you there at 8:45. I am planning to do lunch at Lancaster's, so plan accordingly. We'll likely get back at 1:30 +/-. Look for the white Mustang near the entrance to the lot.

If this applies to anyone, I'd like to move the carpool meeting time up to closer to 8:30. . .

Are we stopping to eat in the middle of the hike or eating after?

    June 13, 2014

    • Don

      After.

      June 13, 2014

    • David K.

Hi Emily. Since it's a fairly short hike and we should finish about noon, the usual plan is to leave Latta and head a couple short miles down the road to Lancaster's BBQ to gather and eat. Of course, it is optional and every person is on their own for ordering and paying. It just gives us a fun way to continue the day for anyone who wants to and has the time. Hope you can join us!

I was considering meeting up on the trail. I can enter the park from my sub and land on where hill and cove trail intersect. Can you confirm if you'll be passing that area?

    June 9, 2014

    • David K.

No, we won't be near any water, so landing your helicopter would be better than bringing your submarine. Honestly Tammy, it's early and that's what I thought you were saying when I first read this. . . but seriously folks. . . I am not planning on hiking that upper part of the park as it is too out in the open. We will be doing the trails in the lower, shady part so you can hike down to the Nature Center, where we will be leaving from and returning to if that works for you. Sorry.

How many miles are you going to hike?

    June 7, 2014

  • Paul G.

This sounds good, does anybody know if I can take my dog to Lancasters (since I have no idea where it is)?

    May 25, 2014

    • David K.

Paul, Lancasters is a bbq restaurant a couple miles down from the park on Beatty's Ford Rd. I don't think they allow dogs inside. You may want to phone ahead to ask for what you need however. We typically go there, eat, and go on; not much more than an hour.

I will be driving my pickup truck. I will be happy for others to ride with me. Just call or text me at[masked]-4300. We can then plan a meeting place for us to meet. Four can ride in my truck comfortably.

    Hello All!
I'm excited about joining you all for this hike. I'm out of shape and I'm feeling it. I just had a rotator cuff repair surgery in Feb, so I'm wanting to get started.
