This is a great trip for backpacking beginners. It is a two-day, one-night trip that covers 11 miles, round trip, with a gain of 900 feet in elevation.
Max Patch itself is a bald mountain that gives you a 360 degree view of surrounding mountains. It's a great place to see the sunset, sunrise and the stars.
IMPORTANT: If we have not hiked together, contact me to talk about how you will be able to complete this trip without risking the safety or enjoyment of yourself and others. If you do not contact me, respond to me or I cannot contact you, I will take you off the "Going" list.
On Saturday, we will meet at Max Patch, carpool to Lemon Gap and then head South on the Appalachian Trail with our packs. We will be walking approx 5.5 miles to to Max Patch summit, one of the best vistas in NC. We will make camp in the area. On Sunday morning, we will pack everything up and then head back to the cars.
Water: There is a water source about 3.5 miles into the hike. You will need to treat/filter the water and take enough with you for the last 2 miles for dinner and breakfast.
Privy: There is no privy near Max Patch. Be prepared to do your business behind bushes or trees.
Weather: It is usually 10 degrees colder at the top and because it is a bald mountain, the wind can pick up. Bring your tent stakes, a down jacket and a jacket shell/wind breaker.
If the weather is very questionable, we will instead camp at the Roaring Fork Shelter, which is about mid-way between our trail head and Max Patch. The site has water, a shelter, privy and at least 7 spots suitable for tents. However, it does not have beautiful views, which is why we will optimally camp around Max Patch.
Travel time to the trailhead from Charlotte is approx 3 hours. Carpooling is encouraged.
