This hiking group is for people who like to undertake challenging hikes and climbs in and around the Coachella Valley, as well as all of Southern California and the Sierras. We hike Mt. San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, Baldy and Mt. Shasta, just to name a few. Our hikes range from approximately 10-20 miles and may gain at least 2000 feet to over 10,000 feet of elevation. Our hikes are moderate to very strenuous. Some of our hikes include Skyline, Cactus to Clouds, Vivian Creek, South Fork and routes on Baldy. We also do a good bit of mountaineering and go to the summits of San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, Mt. Baldy and Mt. Shasta in the snow or ice using crampons, ice axes and full on winter gear. In addition, there are many desert hikes that we do in the winter, such as Jo Pond and the Guadalupe to Sugarloaf, as well as Painted Canyon in Mecca and many trails in Joshua Tree National Park. Our hikes typically last at least 6-15 hours and require preparation and care. Join this group if you love the outdoors, adventure, challenging hikes or climbs, intense workouts in nature, unpredictable weather and wonderful camaraderie with other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. We also welcome hike organizers, so if you are interested in leading your favorite hikes, we would love to have you join our leadership team.

Summit two 14ers, lots of miles (30ish) and elevation gain (15K?). Must be ok with lots of 2nd and some 3rd class terrain. Shepherd Pass Trailhead. 4 permits total. Message Jose if interested. Plan is to backpack up Shepherd Pass Friday and set up camp, summit Williamson Saturday, and Tyndall Sunday morning. Island Packers Cruises

Please read the entire description of the event prior to signing up! THREE DAYS and TWO NIGHTS on the beautiful Channel Island of SANTA ROSA. Santa Rosa Island became part of Channel Islands National Park in 1980. It is the second largest island in the park. It was primarily used for sheep ranching when privately owned. It also has a population of close to one thousand Torrey pines, which remain an endangered species. LET'S EXPLORE THIS BEAUTIFUL DESTINATION! Even better... limited people allowed on the island! The temperatures in September range a low of 45F to 85F. The island environment is extremely fragile! It is necessary for everyone to read all of the information with regards to what you are allowed to transport on the ferry and to the island. Check-in time is 7am and we will meet as a group @ 630am in the parking area. Return from the island will be Monday @ 3pm. You are responsible for securing your own passage. The round trip fare is $114. I have put their link below. Seats do become limited. You require the “camping” fare for Sept 21st departure @ 8am and return Sept 23rd @ 3pm. Please be sure to read all the rules and regulations with regards to the boat trip. If your gear, water etc... is not properly prepared per instruction, you will be unable to board. THE BOAT CROSSING IS A ROUGH 3 HR RIDE! Please be prepared for CHOPPY, WINDY conditions! Please do NOT sign up if this will be a problem for you! You will be carrying your gear to this spot. Therefore treat this as a backpacking event. You are required to have all of your own food and gear for your entire stay! There are NO food services on the island! There is potable water, toilets, small shelters, picnic tables and fox boxes at the campground. The fox boxes are very small! Therefore BEAR CANISTERS are MANDATORY! The foxes and rodents are plentiful here! ALL FOOD AND SCENTED ITEMS MUST BE CONTAINED and kept in the boxes! NO CAMPFIRES. NO SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAGS AND NO REUSED CARDBOARD. YOU ALSO PACK OUT ALL OF YOUR OWN TRASH! Once setup in camp we will hike to Black Mountain (7 mi r/t). Then return to camp for the evening. SUNDAY WILL BE A LONG ADVENTURE DAY! Be prepared with all of your food, water, hiking gear and beach amenities! We will depart camp at 7am to Lobo Canyon and some beach therapy! Then continue on to Soldedad Peak. The day will be approximately 24 miles and expect to return in the dark. MONDAY we will depart camp at 7am for the Torrey Pines Loop (6 mi r/t). Return to the campground to pack-up and head for the pier @ 1pm. We must be at the pier no later than 2pm for boarding. San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Marks Fifth Anniversary

WHAT: New Forest Leader to Tell of Challenges, Opportunities as National Monument Marks Fifth Anniversary WHEN: Reception 7 p.m.; Program 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2019 WHERE: Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Dr., Pasadena As we mark the fifth anniversary of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, the Angeles National Forest’s new supervisor, Jerry Perez, will discuss some of many challenges including increasing fire intensity during climate change, and little money to hire staff. This amid plans to improve recreational opportunities along the vital San Gabriel River and continuing efforts to expand the Monument. What significant changes can we expect in the next few years? How best to manage one of the most complex and heavily-visited U.S. national forests, one that is within a 90-minute drive of 17 million people? Jerome “Jerry” Perez brings a career in managing public lands to his leadership of the Angeles forest. He grew up in upstate New York, received a BA in forest resource management from West Virginia University, and a law degree from Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. While a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana from 1989 to 1991, he met his future wife, Rita, another Peace Corps volunteer. Beginning his career in the U.S. Forest Service, he held a number of supervisory positions in Utah, Kentucky and California, and as national litigation coordinator in the Forest Service headquarters in Washington, D.C. In 2012 he joined the Bureau of Land Management as director of the federal agency’s Oregon-Washington office, and in 2016 became BLM state manager in California, a position he held until moving back to the Forest Service in October 2018 as Angeles Forest supervisor. Including the Peace Corps, he has completed nearly 30 years of federal service. A social reception at 7 p.m. precedes the 7:30 program sponsored by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s Forest Committee. The program is free and the public is welcome. Directions to Eaton Canyon: From the 210 Freeway in Pasadena, take the Altadena Drive exit (if westbound on the 210, take the Sierra Madre off-ramp,and at the bottomr go west another few blocks to Altadena Drive), drive north toward the mountains about a mile, and 500 feet after crossing New York Drive, turn right into Eaton Canyon Park. This will be a TWO-NIGHT backpacking trip to DUSY BASIN for experienced backpackers and explorers! Due to the Sierra snow-pack this year, I haven’t been able to get to the basin with a group! Autumn is a beautiful time of year at this locale! Let's see how far we can travel! FRIDAY 10/11/19 MEET @ 10:30AM at BISHOP PASS SOUTH LAKE TRAILHEAD (9800') 8MI 2200' GAIN to Dusy Basin Third Lake (11100') or BEST OPTION for basecamp. SATURDAY 10/12/19 @ 8AM DEPART DUSY BASIN w/daypacks for exploration to LE CONTE CANYON and surrounding area on the JMT. (10-12MI R/T 3100' GAIN/LOSS). RETURN TO CAMP. SUNDAY 10/13/19 @ 7AM DEPART CAMP and return to the South Lake TH via the Chocolate Lakes Loop with an ascent of Chocolate Peak (11682'). This is a gorgeous time of the year to visit the area! The trees are bright with orange and yellow and Autumn is truly in the air! Spectacular views of the High Sierra with an abundance of alpine lakes! We will travel over Bishop Pass and descend into Dusy Basin. Set-up basecamp near Third Lake for two nights. There will be LOTS of water this year!
