Mother Nature hasn't cooperated - Ellen summited MSJ on Wednesday and Skylined on Tuesday - Ellen's Choice - a Skyline instead of a Snowshoe... Sorry for the last minute switch due to conditions and we hope to see all of you on Sunday.
Conditions should be superb for a winter Skyline. There should be patchy snow beginning around the Traverse. Ellen used Microspikes and poles on Tuesday, so they will be required equipment.
THIS WILL BE A STAGGERED START, COMMENCING AT 5:30 for the slowest hikers. So this time, we'll be sweeping from the front... And this means, if you have any uncertainty about your pace or are uncertain about the route, you should join us at the early start and in the alternative if you are at all uncertain of your ability to complete Skyline, please just come up the tram for the celebration.
If anyone leaves after 5:30am, there will not be a 'sweep' among the later departures.
CAN EVERYONE WHO IS PLANNING ON ATTENDING - TEXT or EMAIL - with your name and cell number - your planned departure time. Also on Sunday, IF YOU'RE ON the ROSTER - whether you cancel late, turn back or complete Skyline, please be sure to text Jack P to let me know you're okay. My email for this event will be: [masked] or text to[masked]. Please be sure to include your name so I'm sure who's contacting me. THANK YOU.
PARTS of ORIGINAL POST FOLLOWS:
It happened five years ago on Super Bowl Sunday. Our dear friend Ellen found herself in a situation that could have easily ended her life. But it didn't! She did absolutely what needed to be done to survive, and our gift is that she is still here to hike with us.
So, we plan to celebrate this very special day by snowshoeing to the San Jacinto Summit with a Skyline with our friend Ellen.
We will choose the route depending on snow conditions. More than likely we will take Sid Davis to Ranger Overland to the Miller cutoff. Round trip will be about 7.5 miles.
This is a very strenuous, advanced hike, ascending 9 miles and 8.400 total vertical feet. So please sign up only if you are comfortable in snow and using Microspikes and poles.
Also, bring winter clothing, food and all other essentials.
AND AS OUR ORIGINAL POST NOTED: "...Oh and just in case snow conditions are not good for a summit hike on this day, we will choose an alternative hike, such as....yep....that's right...you guessed it...Skyline!"
