Gain: ~4,000+ feet
Distance: 8+ miles
The ultimate short cut to Baldy.
Please do not sign up for this hike if you are not prepared to hike over 4000 ft on a very, very steep use trail. The actual "ridge" portion is over 2500 ft in elevation gain over about 1.5 miles. The total hike is about 3.5 miles from the trailhead to the summit and about 3.5 miles from the summit to the Notch.
I'm planning to hit the trail early, summit, and return via the backbone to the Notch and then take the ski lift down. Others may take the Ski Hut trail down or hike down the road. Lift tickets are $11 for adults and $7 for seniors.
This well-traveled use trail splits off near the beginning of the Ski Hut trail and runs straight up Register Ridge before intersecting with the Devil's Backbone trail just below Mt. Harwood. It's steep, but not particularly loose or dangerous, with minimal exposure (but fantastic views to both sides of the ridge). Please be prepared for a wide range of temperatures.
