Moderate 4-mile hike at easy pace near Squak Mountain State Park near Issaquah

  • Apr 6, 2013 · 1:00 PM

Approximately 3 hours.

What to bring: Dress for all weather possibilities, bring hiking stick if you have one, and bring raingear and boots with good tread as the trails will be slick – we will hike rain or shine. Water bottle, trail mix, and/or sandwich.

The trail cuts through a lowland forest and up the south side of Cougar Mountain. We should see small wildlife, birds, wildflowers, and forests. The trail is often quiet and fairly free of other hikers. We’ll learn more about this protected park just a short distance from our King County cities and developments. Come get familiar with the great hiking available in your Cougar Mountain King County Park!

We will hike a loop of about 4 miles with a total elevation gain of a bit less than 1,000 feet.

RSVP in advance required. Carpools encouraged, we can help you to find out who is coming from the same general area as you.

(Description updated Apr 4.  We will hike in an area near but not in the state park, so Discover Pass not required.)

I shouldn't have taken my umbrella out earlier so that I won't get so wet, haha...

Neither moderate nor at an easy pace. Killer vertical and a very wet experience but 5 stars for the beauty of early spring

    • Kristen B.

Yeah, I thought we would take it slower because it was vertical to keep it moderate (which is more than "easy" and not getting up to "difficult". I didn't think it was enough to rate it difficult but i think the rain or just the leader's enthusiasm to move caused us to go too fast. I feel bad about that.

Very good trail - not too busy and beautiful forest. As we went up the fog in the trees was lovely - made up for the rain. But, the rain was kind of a bummer - i felt like it made us go at a faster pace than would have been ideal. Felt like pauses made people get too wet.

pretty nice despite the weather! always prefer a hike that is more horizontal. I am vertically challenged (at least going up!).

Oh, yes I have the details. If you want, please let the other lady from Kent have my email in case she wants to carpool. I have a gigantic truck that would take up a lot of space if I brought it. Maybe I could meet her somewhere, like Southcenter or something?

hey, I'm sorry, I don't think I can make it. I just got invited to a b-day party. I don't know how to remove my reservation.

    April 3, 2013

  • Terri C.

This is my first meetup for this group, how do get started? Do I just show up? Or can I join the carpool?

    March 24, 2013

    • Kristen B.

Hi Terri- I'll send out the exact meeting spot to those who have RSVP'd and i'll let people who may be coming from the same direction know that they can contact each other to carpool. It's better to share rides but it all depends on who is going :). I'll get back to you when the event is a bit closer.

    dog on leash ever allowed?

    March 23, 2013

    • Kristen B.

Hi Diana- it depends on the hike. In any hike we do, dogs must be sure to stay on the trail and be certain not touch other group members unless invited. This trail allows dogs on leash, so just let us know ahead of time and it should be fine. Thanks for asking.

    March 23, 2013

    • Kristen B.

Hi Tracy- I let Terri know that we'll help people try to carpool by trying to let them know who else is going that is near them. Stay tuned as it gets closer. Thanks!

Is it ok to bring kids to this event? Mine are 8 & 9?

    March 25, 2013

    • Kristen B.

Yes, kids are welcome. Just make sure to let us know because we want to count them in our overall group size. thanks!
