West Tiger 1 via the Section Line Trail

Let's start the weekend off right, with a good TGIF work-out hike on my favorite Tiger Mountain hike route, on some of nicest, little-traveled trails on Tiger Mountain, to the best viewpoint on Tiger Mountain.  Our route will be: Nook Trail to Section Line Trail to West Tiger 3 to Tiger Mountain Trail (TMT) to Poo Top Trail to West Tiger 1 to road walk to West Tiger 2 to TMT to K3 Trail to TMT back to the parking lot.

Hiking conditioning required for this hike: To sign up for this hike, you must be doing hikes of 8+ miles and 2500+ feet vertical gain on a regular basis.

When signing up, please answer the sign-up questions as best you can.  Your answers and the info in your profile need to demonstrate the required level of hiking condition and experience.  If you do not answer the sign-up questions, your RSVP will be deleted.

Mandatory and Recommended Equipment:

Mandatory: Study hiking boots, warm mittens/gloves, warm hat, layered cool and warm clothes, water and snacks.

Recommended: Traction devices and headlamp. There is a chance that we may encounter some snow or ice.  (Microspikes or Yak-Trax) are recommended for this hike. (Microspikes are more rugged, easier to put on, bite deeper on ice, and the preference of most experienced winter hikers. If you purchase Yak-Trax, the Yak-Trax Pro is recommended; the standard Yak-Trax tend to break.)

RSVP, Carpooling and Driving Directions:

This hike is cross-posted.  The RSVP sizes may be re-adjusted depending on the sign-up distribution.

There is no pre-planned carpooling for this hiking.  If you want to carpool, please arrange it through the RSVP comments.

We are meeting at the large trailhead parking lot.  We are not meeting at the gate where the frontage road turns to dirt.  Continue through the gate to the parking lot.  Don't forget your Discovery Pass; the exorbitant fine for not displaying one is $99 :(.

Details:

• Distance: 9 miles RT.

• Elevation Gain: 2900 ft. (most of the elevation gain happens in the first two miles)

• High Point: 3000 ft.

• Difficulty: strenuous.

• Hiking Time: ~ 5 hrs.

• Hiking Speed: fast, 30 minutes per mile.

• Parking Pass: Discovery Pass required.

• Dogs: Hikers only this hike.

Schedule and Itinerary:

• 12:30 PM – Meet at the trailhead parking lot.

• 12:40 PM – Start hiking.

• ~ 1:45 PM – Arrive at West Tiger 3.

• ~ 3:15 PM – Arrive at West Tiger 1.

• ~ 5:45 PM – Arrive back at the trailhead parking lot.

What to bring (this is what experienced hikers wear and bring, for comfort both uphill and downhill): Sturdy hiking boots, gaiters, light or medium-weight non-cotton clothing for the uphill, very warm mittens or gloves, light or medium-weight hat, also a warm hat, rain jacket, rain pants, extra non-cotton shirt to change into at the top, warm, dry clothes, preferably fleece, for the downhill, 1+ liters of water, snacks, day-pack large enough to hold all the above, traction devices, headlamp. Optional and recommended: hiking poles, camera, waterproof pack-cover, hot chocolate!
