  • Easy Pace Hike at Gunpowder Falls State Park
We will be doing the Sweathouse Branch Loop which is 4.7 miles long with a total elevation gain of 380 feet and a couple of stream crossings. Our plan is to take this hike at an easy pace of around 2 mph with breaks on the elevation gains to ensure everyone is able to stay together and catch their breath. We are here to enjoy the journey. We will take an extended break at mile 3.2 at a beautiful spot on the water. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks. The final 1.5 miles is flat ground beside the river but can be muddy in spots. I will have my cell phone with me but may not have coverage on the entire trail. [masked]. The park allows dogs but states they must be kept on the leash at all times. *** IMPORTANT *** PARTICIPATION IN THIS GROUP IS SUBJECT TO THE LIABILITY WAIVER, INDEMNIFICATION, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS (https://www.meetup.com/HikingAroundBaltimore/pages/23647795/LIABILITY_WAIVER_AND_ASSUMPTION_OF_RISK/). Chris from a local Columbia Meetup group invited our group to attend with his group. Cost is $9 for skating and $3 for Skate rentals. There are concession stands that sell drinks (non alcoholic), pizza and other food. There is also a 15 minute intermission to clean the ice. Have a good time ice skating whether you are a beginner or experienced. • Beginner Friendly Night Hike along the Little Gunpowder Falls River from JM
I have been leading night hikes in the Gunpowder Park system for about five years. But the hikes have always been oriented toward experienced hikers. Hiking in the woods in pitch black with only your light to guide you is a cool experience and great exercise. To help share this fun with more people I am offering a weekly beginner-friendly night hike. The pace will be a little slower, the distance a little shorter and the trail a little simpler. Hopefully more will experience this interesting twist on being outdoors and join for the more challenging night hikes. Or just come to these weekly and make some great new friends. Here are the simplified rules: 1) You will need a light, preferably a head lamp but a good flashlight that can run for an hour or two is fine. 2) Please bring plenty of water. About a liter is probably fine. 3) Smile and have fun! Yes, it's dark and I can't see if you're smiling. But I can still tell! :) This hike is a 3 to 4.5 miles total hike following the Little Gunpowder Falls River from Jerusalem Mill to as far as Bel Air Road then back. The tallest hill climb is about 150 feet. The terrain is mostly beaten down dirt but there are a few patches with loose rocks. The total length will be determined by the group's desire and abilities. There are multiple routes we can take and i will tailor the exact paths to match what each night's group wants to do. We'll hike at about a 2.5 mph pace with short breaks at the tops of hills and about every half mile so the group stays together. This makes sure nobody gets lost and helps socializing. We will step off at 6:45PM. Dogs are welcome on this hike but they must be well behaved and on lead at all times. Photography - please only take scenery and landscape photos. Please do not photograph or record video of any people unless you have requested and have their consent. Long hiking pants are highly recommended! Water proof shoes or boots are also recommended. The group usually grabs dinner afterward at Tacos Tolteca, Texas Roadhouse or Sunshine Grill. *** IMPORTANT *** BY ATTENDING THIS EVENT, YOU AGREE TO THE LIABILITY WAIVER, INDEMNIFICATION, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS (https://www.meetup.com/HikingAroundBaltimore/pages/23647795/LIABILITY_WAIVER_AND_ASSUMPTION_OF_RISK/) (revision July 6, 2017). • Harper's Ferry: Louden Heights, Strenuous 8.5 Miles
Directions to Harper's Ferry from Baltimore: 70 West to 340 South. Follow 340 from MD to Vir to W Vir. After crossing the Shenandoah River, take first Right at Shenandoah St and follow to the end of the road and make a left hand turn. The Amtrack parking lot is two blocks away on the Right Hand Side. There is a $10 parking fee (per car) at the Amtrack Station in Harper's Ferry, so I would strongly recommend car pooling. I will be at the RT 70 Park and Ride by Security Blvd at 8:50 AM and leave at 9:00 AM. Parking is difficult and I know a spot that can accommodate multiple cars. The climb to the top of Louden Heights is very steep, so there will be several stops along the way. Optional lunch on the decks outside after the hike with a nice view of the mountains. We will stop at Louden Heights for about 30 minutes, so bring a lunch or snack. The view at the top is spectacular with views of the town of Harper's Ferry and the Shenendoah and Potomac Rivers. Dogs Allowed. Bring plenty of water and a lunch/snack for the overlook.
