Who is up for some exploring!? I've had my eye on some trails along the Big Gunpowder River I've never done before. I hear there are trails on the North side of the river past the swimming hole at the Long Green Run all the way to Harford Rd but that they are not maintained by the park.
Plan to get slightly lost, kinda muddy and go a bit slower than my typical hikes. We'll average about 2.5mph and explore a few miles out from the swimming hole. We'll make a bee-line for the exploring part by hiking out the 1.5 miles of flat terrain to the swimming hole at a fast pace. Once we return to the swimming hole after a few miles of exploring we'll head up the hill to the Wildlands Loop so we get some terrain changes.
Total distance of the Wildlands loop is about 4.6 miles. The section along the river is 1.5 miles and you could bail and turn back here and have a REALLY hard time getting lost.
Depending on how much we explore, the total distance will probably be between 6 and 8 miles.
Once we head into the Wildlands Loop there is no bail off area so please be able to do the full distance for that part - about 3 miles with some hills with about 250 feet of elevation gain. There are two hills of any significance and three stream crossings. This trail is commonly used for trail running so it is wide and well worn.
Please plan to be able to keep up at 2.5 to 3 miles per hour pace for 2-3 hours without significant breaks. We stop about once every 1-2 miles for the slower hikers to close the gap. So faster hikers get breaks and slower ones get to work on their stamina. It's a win-win for everyone. :)
We will step off at 9:45AM. If you are late post to this message board since I check it right before we step off. If you miss because of traffic I won't mark you as a no show. Just let me know.
Meet at the Northern most part of the GPL parking lot, to the right of the restaurant if you are facing the restaurant. Please park to the left of the restaurant. Leave the premium parking spaces for the customers that are not hiking for a few hours. :)
If something happens and you need to reach my txt or call me at:
Dogs are NOT welcome on this hike since we are exploring. Sorry, just don't know what the terrain is like. Well, if the dog is small enough to fit in your backpack they can come. At that point tiny dogs, cats, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, parrots, etc that can ride on you or in your pack are perfectly fine by me.
Long hiking pants and two layers of top clothes are highly recommended! Hiking boots are recommended too since it may be muddy and there may be stream crossings. We're exploring!
I expect all hikers to be respectful to each other. One would think this doesn't need to be said but I've had some issues recently. So I need to make a rule that I can reference and say, hey you, go be a jerk somewhere else!
If you cannot attend please change your RSVP. Two no-shows will result in me asking you to remove yourself from future events that have a wait list.
This is cross posted between the 20s & 30s Hiking Around Maryland and the Hiking Around Baltimore meetup groups. No need to RSVP both places.
If the group wants we can continue for an extra mile or two on the Lost Pond trail South of Rte 1 and bump this up to about 10 miles.
Also we could grab a drink afterward at Gunpowder lodge or another nearby restaurant. Group decides. I hear they have a great brunch as long as you have the time for it.
