Usually we only hike the Maze Trails in the fall. But since it is heavily forested the trails will be great for summer hiking. My favorite twist and turn and go up and down like a roller coaster. These often hidden hard to find trails go every which way, except maybe the way you want to go. You can actually get stuck on one like you are lost in a maze! I've found several new trails too. ----------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO FIND US: (Meetup deletes this information from App) Meet in front of stables about 100 yards before the Mansion. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Caution:You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break. • Navy Yard/FDR Park Stadium Area Girard Estates Exploration

    American Swedish Historical Museum

    $5.00

3-4 hours, 7-11 miles, Navy Yard, FDR Park, & Girard Estates 6 ft social distancing in force, bring a mask, pay with rsvp Please CLICK HERE to pay & for essential event info (http://www.meetup.com/HikingAroundPhilly/pages/Important_Information_About_Each_Hike/) before/when you rsvp. From the American Swedish Museum in FDR Park in deep South Philly we'll head over to the Navy Yard which is about 1 mile away. Most of the ghost towns are gone now, but there is still a lot of cool stuff at the Navy Yard. This includes mothballed ships including aircraft carriers, old Navy buildings, and a great number of new non-navy ones. One is shaped an aircraft carrier. Urban Outfitters world HQ buildings and located here. Hopefully we'll be able to get a good look at the insides. One is like an modern art museum. Last time there we met the Bomb Squad involved in a training exercise. On the way to and from from the Navy Yard we'll bop around the FDR Park formerly called the South Philly Fairgrounds when the Sesquicentennial (World's Fair) was held here in 1925. Of interest are the lakes, trails, the Russian Navy exhibit from the centennial, the gigantic cartoonized skate board area and a real 17th century castle. The American Swedish Museum, which was built just in time for the Fair in 1925, was modeled after a 17th century Swedish castle. We'll head over to Girard Estates after the Navy Yard visit. This area which was once owned by Stephan Girard has very different architecture from the rest of South Philly and Philly. It's quite nice. Prey for a cloudy day. Caution:You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break. You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above. ----------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO FIND US: (Meetup may omit this information from App) Meet inside FDR park at the steps of the American Swedish Museum.
