We do many different hikes in the Princeton University area. Sometimes we go off University to explore Mt Lake Park and environs, sometimes we stay on campus and visit the Art Museum, gardens, etc. On this hike we're doing a little bit of everything. We walk through the University, then head towards the Institute of Advanced Study Woods, Princeton Battlefield Park, and the Charles Rodgers Wildlife Preserve where we will find the Temple of Doom Bridge in the middle of nowhere. The bridge actually goes nowhere too!! There are many options on this hike and like Johnny Carson said, "when you get to the fork in the road, take it", we'll take our options. Afterwards we may head over to Alchemist and Barrister for a beer and/or repast. Long pants recommended because the Rodgers Wildlife Preserve is often overgrown. • Trexler Preserve

    Trexler Environmental Center

    $4.00

4 hours, 8-12 miles, very hilly, beautiful views, foliage, great trails, elk, bison, T Rex Please CLICK HERE (http://www.meetup.com/HikingAroundPhilly/pages/Important_Information_About_Each_Hike/)before boundary. There is no place like Trexler Preserve in the area, maybe anywhere. The views from many vantage points and trails are just stupendous. The foliage in the spring and summer is incredible: last year someone described the hike as walking in a terrarium. The trails usually twist and turn, sometimes they go straight up; no climbing, but just about as steep as you can make a hill. We'll slow down on these hills, but there are quite a few. Trexler is also a preserve for elk and bison. They roam freely in a separate large areas with Jurassic Park type fences at the boundary. If we are lucky we'll get some good sightings. We only hike Trexler in the spring and fall. In the summer many areas are exposed to the sun. In the winter, snow or ice would make the trails dangerous. Of course each hike is a unique event: different trails, views, and discoveries. Caution:You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break. You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above, run up and down the stadium seats a few times to get in shape.
