The Jim Thorpe area is a great area to hike if you can find the trails. These trails are on the ridge on the other side of the Lehigh from Glen Onoko Falls. The biggest hill here is about the first 20 yards to access the area.
Part of the hike will be on small trails in a thick Rhododendron forrest past what used to be a luxury hotel in times past. Eventually we'll reach the locks used by ships to avoid the rocky river. There will be some great views. We hiked in this area 2 years ago.
We'll hike for 3-4 hours covering 8-9 miles. If we are done early, some folks may want to do Glen Onoko Falls. It's about an 1-1.5 hour hike. Very beautiful and very steep.
Directions to meetup spot. From I-476 (Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike) take Exit 74. Turn right onto Route 209 South and go 6.0 miles through Jim Thorpe to Route 903. Turn right onto Route 903 North (crossing the large bridge over the Lehigh River ) and go 0.3 mile to the stop sign. Go straight across the intersection onto Coalport Road . Go on Coalport Road 0.3 mile to the entrance to Lehigh Gorge State Park . Turn left at the Lehigh Gorge State Park sign into the park and go 1.6 miles to the access area. - If you go over the bridge, you've gone too far.
Caution: You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break.
You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above.
