The Haverford Heritage Trail passes by at least 30 historic sites in Haverford Township. We''ll hike through parks, by creeks (Darby Creek), near beautiful mansions, through Haverford College, past graveyards and golf courses. One really neat place is the 7 acre Grange Estate which dates back to 1681 via a land grant from William Penn. I'll try to arrange a short tour of the grounds.
We have a short free tour arranged for 15-30 minutes between 1 and 2pm. I was told the estate was named for Lafayette's estate in France and that Lafayette and Washington met here.
This is not an easy trail to follow unless you have certain maps which I did not have on previous hikes. This time I'm better prepared. I'll also run off some duplicates however, you can download the map info at:
The Haverford Trail people have an interactive map available online. Unfortunately, the line showing the route blocks the names of all the streets! So I've made 2 pages of directions: one a map from the brochure which shows the routes minus most street names; the other are the street names in order from the starting point.
Caution:You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break.
You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above.
To carpool from Hill House meet 1 hour before the event. Carpool time changes if hike time changes. Each carpooler chips in $2 at the start. Email me 3-4 days in advance and receive a reply.
