We hike the John Heinz Wildlife Preserve at Tinicum once each season because the landscape and wildlife varies. It's aways nice especially in the winter when the lakes are frozen.
The preserve which is actually located in Philadelphia is right next to a middle class neighborhood and the airport. Once you enter the grounds though, you are transported to a far away exotic location with large lakes, marsh grass and vegetation. We've seen eagles, owls, flycatchers, great blue herons, egrets, ibis, osprey, swallows, yellow warblers as well as deer, fox, ground hogs, and turtles, one almost five feet long measuring the 2 foot tail.
Caution: You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break.
You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above.
To carpool from Hill House (201 W Evergreen Ave, Phila) meet 1 hour before the event. Carpool time changes if hike time changes. Each carpooler chips in $4 at the start. Email me 3-4 days in advance and receive a reply.
