This event is cross posted with other Meetup groups. It is also connected to the overnight trip. You may attend one or the other or both.
All of you that can hardly wait to hike the ladders come and join me for a great adventure. This is one of the most popular, beautiful, enjoyable and picturesque hikes of the desert. I have done this hike many times and it is always fun!
Departure: We will meet at the truck stop and 8:30 and caravan there. I would like to leave on time because it will take about 30 minutes to get out to the trail head. The main road out to the trail head is a gravel road with some loose sand. A regular car can get out there but if we can ride together in trucks or vehicles not so low to the ground it is much better.
Details of the Hike: This hike is a five mile loop which I would level as a moderate, intermediate hike. It will take approximately 3 hours. There is some elevation gain but not a significant amount. The hike will takes us on some rock scrambling where we will eventually climb a series of ladders, each time getting to the next level. As you hike and climb you will travel through some beautiful canyon walls. At times the canyon trails and ladders are in narrow, tight places but the ladders are well maintained and very secure. If you are afraid of heights, tight or narrow spaces this hike might not be for you. The trail eventually leads up to the top of the mesa which looks out over the valley and gives us beautiful views all the way to the Salton Sea. We will take a rest at the top of the mesa so bring plenty of snacks and water. It is important to drink plenty of water while hiking so you stay hydrated. The trip back will take us hiking back through the sandy wash were you will be able to view beautiful rock formations along the way. The hike does require sturdy hiking shoes with traction to keep you from slipping on the rocks and the ladders. Hiking shoes also help when walking through the washes. I will have a sweep and a guide in the middle to help anyone feeling a little insecure. We will not leave anyone behind and I will make sure everyone has a great time. I will plan lunch for afterwards if enough people are interested in going. We have some great Mexican Restaurants.

Everyone is responsible for themselves. NEVER RELY ON ANYONE ELSE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY!! Know your limits and know where you are going and what the hike involves. Come prepared with:
1) three liters of water (at the least!)
3) wind breaker
4) toilet paper and ziplock bag to carry out your used toilet paper

Every hiker should have a pack with the ten essentials and bring it on every hike, even short ones. Desert hiking is especially risky. If you don't know what they are check this out: http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/ten+essentials.html
