About the Hike: This would be a great fitness-check hike for those doing the San Gorgonio hike the next weekend. If you find this hike almost too hard, well, that San G hike will take another 25% out of ya.

OK, onto the details for the hike, we'll go up Ice House Canyon to bag two of the three T's. Let's meet and greet 10 minutes before up trail time. We'll do that at the stairs by the trail head (just beyond the public restrooms). The plan is we amble up Ice House Canyon Parking Lot to the Saddle at a decent pace (3.6 miles & 2700 ft gain). Enjoy a short breather and regroup. We'll then continue on to Timber via the 3 T's trail (1 mile & 600 ft gain from Saddle). Do another short breather and regroup here before we tackle our final objective of the day, Telegraph (2 miles & 1200 ft gain from the low point between Timber & Telegraph). This would make a fine lunch spot. We'll return the same way. That little elevation loss you had after Timber now looms as a monster up hill. Funny how that works. I'll pick up the Wilderness permit from the Ranger Station in Mt Baldy Village for the group. Let's try to stay together as a group until we do a final regroup thing on the return leg at the Ice House Saddle. After that, it's each individual's choice on whether to head down to the parking lot or go bag Cucamonga or Ontario. Please do not sign up if 2 to 2.5 MPH pace is unbearably fast or boringly slow for you. The total hiking time should take around 6 hours plus however long we stop (excluding individual choice jaunts).

Direction to trail head & miscellany: From the 210 Freeway extension, driving west: In Upland, exit Mountain Ave./Mt. Baldy Exit, Exit 54. Turn right and proceed north on Mountain Ave. Drive 5 miles to Mt. Baldy Road. Turn right (north) and after 5 miles you pass through the Mt. Baldy Village. Continue 1.5 miles beyond the village to the Icehouse Canyon entrance. Turn right and park in the large parking area. The trail starts ( at the east end of the parking lot. A National Forest Adventure Pass ( is required for parking.

Disclaimer: First: be responsible for yourself and your guest. If you can't, well this hike probably isn't for you. Second: This is not a beginner hike. 2+ MPH is significant pace for some and that means you'll be climbing 1500 feet per hour for 3 hours straight. Third: I am here because I like hiking with others who like hiking. Please don't sue me because my non-existent mothering skills (or sue anyone else for their lack of mothering skills). It's not good for your karma. OK, rant mode: off.
